Though so many of Donjalolo’s\r\ndays were consumed by sloth and luxury, there came to him certain\r\nintervals of thoughtfulness, when all his curiosity concerning the\r\nthings of outer Mardi revived with augmented intensity. In these moods,\r\nhe would send abroad deputations, inviting to Willamilla the kings of\r\nthe neighboring islands; together with the most celebrated priests,\r\nbards, story-tellers, magicians, and wise men; that he might hear them\r\nconverse of those things, which he could not behold for himself.\r\n\r\nBut at last, he bethought him, that the various narrations he had\r\nheard, could not have been otherwise than unavoidably faulty; by reason\r\nthat they had been principally obtained from the inhabitants of the\r\ncountries described; who, very naturally, must have been inclined to\r\npartiality or uncandidness in their statements. Wherefore he had very\r\nlately dispatched to the isles special agents of his own; honest of\r\nheart, keen of eye, and shrewd of understanding; to seek out every\r\nthing that promised to illuminate him concerning the places they\r\nvisited, and also to collect various specimens of interesting objects;\r\nso that at last he might avail himself of the researches of others, and\r\nsee with their eyes.\r\n\r\nBut though two observers were sent to every one of the neighboring\r\nlands; yet each was to act independently; make his own inquiries; form\r\nhis own conclusions; and return with his own specimens; wholly\r\nregardless of the proceedings of the other.\r\n\r\nIt so came to pass, that on the very day of our arrival in the glen,\r\nthese pilgrims returned from their travels. And Donjalolo had set apart\r\nthe following morning to giving them a grand public reception. And it\r\nwas to this, that our party had been invited, as related in the chapter\r\npreceding.\r\n\r\nIn the great Palm-hall of the House of the Morning, we were assigned\r\ndistinguished mats, to the right of the prince; his chiefs, attendants,\r\nand subjects assembled in the open colonnades without.\r\n\r\nWhen all was in readiness, in marched the company of savans and\r\ntravelers; and humbly standing in a semi-circle before the king, their\r\nnumerous hampers were deposited at their feet.\r\n\r\nDonjalolo was now in high spirits, thinking of the rich store of\r\nreliable information about to be furnished.\r\n\r\n“Zuma,” said he, addressing the foremost of the company, “you and\r\nVarnopi were directed to explore the island of Rafona. Proceed now, and\r\nrelate all you know of that place. Your narration heard, we will list\r\nto Varnopi.”\r\n\r\nWith a profound inclination the traveler obeyed.\r\n\r\nBut soon Donjalolo interrupted him. “What say you, Zuma, about the\r\nsecret cavern, and the treasures therein? A very different account,\r\nthis, from all I have heard hitherto; but perhaps yours is the true\r\nversion. Go on.”\r\n\r\nBut very soon, poor Zuma was again interrupted by exclamations of\r\nsurprise.
