The surviving negroes were temporarily\r\nsecured, and the ship, towed back into the harbor at midnight, once\r\nmore lay anchored.\r\n\r\nOmitting the incidents and arrangements ensuing, suffice it that, after\r\ntwo days spent in refitting, the ships sailed in company for\r\nConception, in Chili, and thence for Lima, in Peru; where, before the\r\nvice-regal courts, the whole affair, from the beginning, underwent\r\ninvestigation.\r\n\r\nThough, midway on the passage, the ill-fated Spaniard, relaxed from\r\nconstraint, showed some signs of regaining health with free-will; yet,\r\nagreeably to his own foreboding, shortly before arriving at Lima, he\r\nrelapsed, finally becoming so reduced as to be carried ashore in arms.\r\nHearing of his story and plight, one of the many religious institutions\r\nof the City of Kings opened an hospitable refuge to him, where both\r\nphysician and priest were his nurses, and a member of the order\r\nvolunteered to be his one special guardian and consoler, by night and\r\nby day.\r\n\r\nThe following extracts, translated from one of the official Spanish\r\ndocuments, will, it is hoped, shed light on the preceding narrative, as\r\nwell as, in the first place, reveal the true port of departure and true\r\nhistory of the San Dominick’s voyage, down to the time of her touching\r\nat the island of St. Maria.\r\n\r\nBut, ere the extracts come, it may be well to preface them with a\r\nremark.\r\n\r\nThe document selected, from among many others, for partial translation,\r\ncontains the deposition of Benito Cereno; the first taken in the case.\r\nSome disclosures therein were, at the time, held dubious for both\r\nlearned and natural reasons. The tribunal inclined to the opinion that\r\nthe deponent, not undisturbed in his mind by recent events, raved of\r\nsome things which could never have happened. But subsequent depositions\r\nof the surviving sailors, bearing out the revelations of their captain\r\nin several of the strangest particulars, gave credence to the rest.
