You don’t see any Methodist chaps feelin’\r\ndreadful about their souls; you don’t see any darned beggars and pesky\r\nconstables in _Madagasky, I_ tell ye; and none o’ them kings there gets\r\ntheir big toes pinched by the gout. Blast Ameriky, I say.”\r\n\r\nIndeed, this Larry was rather cutting in his innuendoes.\r\n\r\n“Are _you_ now, Buttons, any better off for bein’ snivelized?” coming\r\nclose up to me and eying the wreck of my gaff-topsail-boots very\r\nsteadfastly. “No; you ar’n’t a bit—but you’re a good deal _worse_ for\r\nit, Buttons. I tell ye, ye wouldn’t have been to sea here, leadin’ this\r\ndog’s life, if you hadn’t been snivelized—that’s the cause why, now.\r\nSnivelization has been the ruin on ye; and it’s spiled me complete; I\r\nmight have been a great man in Madagasky; it’s too darned bad! Blast\r\nAmeriky, I say.” And in bitter grief at the social blight upon his\r\nwhole past, present, and future, Larry turned away, pulling his hat\r\nstill lower down over the bridge of his nose.\r\n\r\nIn strong contrast to Larry, was a young man-of-war’s man we had, who\r\nwent by the name of _“Gun-Deck,”_ from his always talking of sailor\r\nlife in the navy. He was a little fellow with a small face and a\r\nprodigious mop of brown hair; who always dressed in man-of-war style,\r\nwith a wide, braided collar to his frock, and Turkish trowsers. But he\r\nparticularly prided himself upon his feet, which were quite small; and\r\nwhen we washed down decks of a morning, never mind how chilly it might\r\nbe, he always took off his boots, and went paddling about like a duck,\r\nturning out his pretty toes to show his charming feet.\r\n\r\nHe had served in the armed steamers during the Seminole War in Florida,\r\nand had a good deal to say about sailing up the rivers there, through\r\nthe everglades, and popping off Indians on the banks. I remember his\r\ntelling a story about a party being discovered at quite a distance from\r\nthem; but one of the savages was made very conspicuous by a pewter\r\nplate, which he wore round his neck, and which glittered in the sun.\r\nThis plate proved his death; for, according to _Gun-Deck,_ he himself\r\nshot it through the middle, and the ball entered the wearer’s heart. It\r\nwas a rat-killing war, he said.\r\n\r\n_Gun-Deck_ had touched at Cadiz: had been to Gibraltar; and ashore at\r\nMarseilles. He had sunned himself in the Bay of Naples: eaten figs and\r\noranges in Messina; and cheerfully lost one of his hearts at Malta,\r\namong the ladies there. And about all these things, he talked like a\r\nromantic man-of-war’s man, who had seen the civilized world, and loved\r\nit; found it good, and a comfortable place to live in. So he and Larry\r\nnever could agree in their respective views of civilization, and of\r\nsavagery, of the Mediterranean and _Madagasky._\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJQS28BC5SY05CSW1RGD9","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1GP71YDJ60P8SRH97MF","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKX6V07HE8S56HABVJCJ1","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:19.675Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:27.834Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
