That I had been at all in\r\nLondon seemed impossible; and that I had been there, and come away\r\nlittle the wiser, was almost distracting to one who, like me, had so\r\nlonged to behold that metropolis of marvels.\r\n\r\nI looked hard at Harry as he walked in silence at my side; I stared at\r\nthe houses we passed; I thought of the cab, the gas lighted hall in the\r\nPalace of Aladdin, the pictures, the letter, the oath, the dirk; the\r\nmysterious place where all these mysteries had occurred; and then, was\r\nalmost ready to conclude, that the pale yellow wine had been drugged.\r\n\r\nAs for Harry, stuffing his false whiskers and mustache into his pocket,\r\nhe now led the way to the boarding-house; and saluting the landlady,\r\nwas shown to his room; where we immediately shifted our clothes,\r\nappearing once more in our sailor habiliments.\r\n\r\n“Well, what do you propose to do now, Harry?” said I, with a heavy\r\nheart.\r\n\r\n“Why, visit your Yankee land in the Highlander, of course—what else?\"\r\nhe replied.\r\n\r\n“And is it to be a visit, or a long stay?” asked I.\r\n\r\n“That’s as it may turn out,” said Harry; “but I have now more than ever\r\nresolved upon the sea. There is nothing like the sea for a fellow like\r\nme, Redburn; a desperate man can not get any further than the wharf,\r\nyou know; and the next step must be a long jump. But come, let’s see\r\nwhat they have to eat here, and then for a cigar and a stroll. I feel\r\nbetter already. Never say die, is my motto.”\r\n\r\nWe went to supper; after that, sallied out; and walking along the quay\r\nof Prince’s Dock, heard that the ship Highlander had that morning been\r\nadvertised to sail in two days’ time.\r\n\r\n“Good!” exclaimed Harry; and I was glad enough myself.\r\n\r\nAlthough I had now been absent from the ship a full forty-eight hours,\r\nand intended to return to her, yet I did not anticipate being called to\r\nany severe account for it from the officers; for several of our men had\r\nabsented themselves longer than I had, and upon their return, little or\r\nnothing was said to them. Indeed, in some cases, the mate seemed to\r\nknow nothing about it. During the whole time we lay in Liverpool, the\r\ndiscipline of the ship was altogether relaxed; and I could hardly\r\nbelieve they were the same officers who were so dictatorial at sea. The\r\nreason of this was, that we had nothing important to do; and although\r\nthe captain might now legally refuse to receive me on board, yet I was\r\nnot afraid of that, as I was as stout a lad for my years, and worked as\r\ncheap, as any one he could engage to take my place on the homeward\r\npassage.\r\n\r\nNext morning we made our appearance on board before the rest of the\r\ncrew; and the mate perceiving me, said with an oath, “Well, sir, you\r\nhave thought best to return then, have you? Captain Riga and I were\r\nflattering ourselves that you had made a run of it for good.”\r\n\r\nThen, thought I, the captain, who seems to affect to know nothing of\r\nthe proceedings of the sailors, has been aware of my absence.\r\n\r\n“But turn to, sir, turn to,” added the mate; “here! aloft there, and\r\nfree that pennant; it’s foul of the backstay—jump!”\r\n\r\nThe captain coming on board soon after, looked very benevolently at\r\nHarry; but, as usual, pretended not to take the slightest notice of\r\nmyself.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJSA770PKV5198BNW3617","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1GP71YDJ60P8SRH97MF","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKX52AEXFQTEYQYPE0MBY","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:19.609Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:32.933Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
