Here, nodding with green\r\norchards of the Bread-fruit and the Palm; there, flashing with golden\r\nplantations of the Banana. Emerging from these, we came out upon a\r\ngrassy mead, skirting a projection of the mountain. And soon we crossed\r\na bridge of boughs, spanning a trench, thickly planted with roots of\r\nthe Tara, like alligators, or Hollanders, reveling in the soft\r\nalluvial. Strolling on, the wild beauty of the mountains excited our\r\nattention. The topmost crags poured over with vines; which, undulating\r\nin the air, seemed leafy cascades; their sources the upland groves.\r\n\r\nMidway up the precipice, along a shelf of rock, sprouted the\r\nmultitudinous roots of an apparently trunkless tree. Shooting from\r\nunder the shallow soil, they spread all over the rocks below, covering\r\nthem with an intricate net-work. While far aloft, great boughs—each a\r\ncopse—clambered to the very summit of the mountain; then bending over,\r\nstruck anew into the soil; forming along the verge an interminable\r\ncolonnade; all manner of antic architecture standing against the sky.\r\n\r\nAccording to Mohi, this tree was truly wonderful; its seed having been\r\ndropped from the moon; where were plenty more similar forests, causing\r\nthe dark spots on its surface.\r\n\r\nHere and there, the cool fluid in the veins of the mountains gushed\r\nforth in living springs; their waters received in green mossy tanks,\r\nhalf buried in grasses.\r\n\r\nIn one place, a considerable stream, bounding far out from a wooded\r\nheight, ere reaching the ground was dispersed in a wide misty shower,\r\nfalling so far from the base of the cliff; that walking close\r\nunderneath, you felt little moisture. Passing this fall of vapors, we\r\nspied many Islanders taking a bath.\r\n\r\nBut what is yonder swaying of the foliage? And what now issues forth,\r\nlike a habitation astir? Donjalolo drawing nigh to his guests.\r\n\r\nHe came in a fair sedan; a bower, resting upon three long, parallel\r\npoles, borne by thirty men, gayly attired; five at each pole-end.\r\nDecked with dyed tappas, and looped with garlands of newly-plucked\r\nflowers, from which, at every step, the fragrant petals were blown;\r\nwith a sumptuous, elastic motion the gay sedan came on; leaving behind\r\nit a long, rosy wake of fluttering leaves and odors.\r\n\r\nDrawing near, it revealed a slender, enervate youth, of pallid beauty,\r\nreclining upon a crimson mat, near the festooned arch of the bower. His\r\nanointed head was resting against the bosom of a girl; another stirred\r\nthe air, with a fan of Pintado plumes. The pupils of his eyes were as\r\nfloating isles in the sea. In a soft low tone he murmured “Media!”\r\n\r\nThe bearers paused; and Media advancing; the Island Kings bowed their\r\nforeheads together.\r\n\r\nThrough tubes ignited at the end, Donjaloln’s reclining attendants now\r\nblew an aromatic incense around him. These were composed of the\r\nstimulating leaves of the “Aina,” mixed with the long yellow blades of\r\na sweet-scented upland grass; forming a hollow stem. In general, the\r\nagreeable fumes of the “Aina” were created by one’s own inhalations;\r\nbut Donjalolo deeming the solace too dearly purchased by any exertion\r\nof the royal lungs, regaled himself through those of his attendants,\r\nwhose lips were as moss-rose buds after a shower.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJVHP6JNK9MEGVB0JNCAN","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1HYC04JWXEK48P07WPK","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKWWX8JBPZ5T9QN3KR4TH","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:19.340Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:31.948Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
