That monarch was Donjalolo.\r\nJust turned of twenty-five, he was accounted not only the handsomest\r\nman in his dominions, but throughout the lagoon. His comeliness,\r\nhowever, was so feminine, that he was sometimes called “Fonoo,” or the\r\nGirl.\r\n\r\nOur first view of Juam was imposing. A dark green pile of cliffs,\r\ntowering some one hundred toises; at top, presenting a range of steep,\r\ngable-pointed projections; as if some Titanic hammer and chisel had\r\nshaped the mass.\r\n\r\nSailing nearer, we perceived an extraordinary rolling of the sea; which\r\nbursting into the lagoon through an adjoining breach in the reef,\r\nsurged toward Juam in enormous billows. At last, dashing against the\r\nwall of the cliff; they played there in unceasing fountains. But under\r\nthe brow of a beetling crag, the spray came and went unequally. There,\r\nthe blue billows seemed swallowed up, and lost.\r\n\r\nRight regally was Juam guarded. For, at this point, the rock was\r\npierced by a cave, into which the great waves chased each other like\r\nlions; after a hollow, subterraneous roaring issuing forth with manes\r\ndisheveled.\r\n\r\nCautiously evading the dangerous currents here ruffling the lagoon, we\r\nrounded the wall of cliff; and shot upon a smooth expanse; on one side,\r\nhemmed in by the long, verdent, northern shore of Juam; and across the\r\nwater, sentineled by its tributary islets.\r\n\r\nWith sonorous Vee-Vee in the shark’s mouth, we swept toward the beach,\r\ntumultuous with a throng.\r\n\r\nOur canoes were secured. And surrounded by eager glances, we passed the\r\nlower ends of several populous valleys; and crossing a wide, open\r\nmeadow, gradually ascending, came to a range of light-green bluffs.\r\nHere, we wended our way down a narrow defile, almost cleaving this\r\nquarter of the island to its base. Black crags frowned overhead: among\r\nthem the shouts of the Islanders reverberated. Yet steeper grew the\r\ndefile, and more overhanging the crags till at last, the keystone of\r\nthe arch seemed dropped into its place. We found ourselves in a\r\nsubterranean tunnel, dimly lighted by a span of white day at the end.\r\n\r\nEmerging, what a scene was revealed! All round, embracing a circuit of\r\nsome three leagues, stood heights inaccessible, here and there, forming\r\nbuttresses, sheltering deep recesses between. The bosom of the place\r\nwas vivid with verdure.\r\n\r\nShining aslant into this wild hollow, the afternoon sun lighted up its\r\neastern side with tints of gold. But opposite, brooded a somber shadow,\r\ndouble-shading the secret places between the salient spurs of the\r\nmountains. Thus cut in twain by masses of day and night, it seemed as\r\nif some Last Judgment had been enacted in the glen.\r\n\r\nNo sooner did we emerge from the defile, than we became sensible of a\r\ndull, jarring sound; and Yoomy was almost tempted to turn and flee,\r\nwhen informed that the sea-cavern, whose mouth we had passed, was\r\nbelieved to penetrate deep into the opposite hills; and that the\r\nsurface of the amphitheater was depressed beneath that of the lagoon.\r\nBut all over the lowermost hillsides, and sloping into the glen, stood\r\ngrand old groves; still and stately, as if no insolent waves were\r\nthrobbing in the mountain’s heart.\r\n\r\nSuch was Willamilla, the hereditary abode of the young monarch of Juam.\r\n\r\nWas Yillah immured in this strange retreat? But from those around us\r\nnaught could we learn.\r\n\r\nOur attention was now directed to the habitations of the glen;\r\ncomprised in two handsome villages; one to the west, the other to the\r\neast; both stretching along the base of the cliffs.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AKKBPTS5HVXF4CD9WGAEK","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1HYC04JWXEK48P07WPK","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKWWCM5PN94GHCG4MS2X3","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:19.340Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:31.490Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
