Rejoiced at this, we prayed for a speedy\r\npassage. But, as it turned out, the consul had no idea of letting us\r\noff so easily. To our no small surprise, an officer came along toward\r\nnight, and ordered us out of irons. Being then mustered in the gangway,\r\nwe were escorted into a cutter alongside, and pulled ashore.\r\n\r\nAccosted by Wilson as we struck the beach, he delivered us up to a\r\nnumerous guard of natives, who at once conducted us to a house near by.\r\nHere we were made to sit down under a shade without; and the consul and\r\ntwo elderly European residents passed by us, and entered.\r\n\r\nAfter some delay, during which we were much diverted by the hilarious\r\ngood-nature of our guard—one of our number was called out for, followed\r\nby an order for him to enter the house alone.\r\n\r\nOn returning a moment after, he told us we had little to encounter. It\r\nhad simply been asked whether he still continued of the same mind; on\r\nreplying yes, something was put down upon a piece of paper, and he was\r\nwaved outside. All being summoned in rotation, my own turn came at\r\nlast.\r\n\r\nWithin, Wilson and his two friends were seated magisterially at a\r\ntable—an inkstand, a pen, and a sheet of paper lending quite a\r\nbusiness-like air to the apartment. These three gentlemen, being\r\narrayed in coats and pantaloons, looked respectable, at least in a\r\ncountry where complete suits of garments are so seldom met with. One\r\npresent essayed a solemn aspect; but having a short neck and full face,\r\nonly made out to look stupid.\r\n\r\nIt was this individual who condescended to take a paternal interest in\r\nmyself. After declaring my resolution with respect to the ship\r\nunalterable, I was proceeding to withdraw, in compliance with a sign\r\nfrom the consul, when the stranger turned round to him, saying, “Wait a\r\nminute, if you please, Mr. Wilson; let me talk to that youth. Come\r\nhere, my young friend: I’m extremely sorry to see you associated with\r\nthese bad men; do you know what it will end in?”\r\n\r\n“Oh, that’s the lad that wrote the Round Robin,” interposed the consul.\r\n“He and that rascally doctor are at the bottom of the whole affair—go\r\noutside, sir.”\r\n\r\nI retired as from the presence of royalty; backing out with many bows.\r\n\r\nThe evident prejudice of Wilson against both the doctor and myself was\r\nby no means inexplicable. A man of any education before the mast is\r\nalways looked upon with dislike by his captain; and, never mind how\r\npeaceable he may be, should any disturbance arise, from his\r\nintellectual superiority, he is deemed to exert an underhand influence\r\nagainst the officers.\r\n\r\nLittle as I had seen of Captain Guy, the few glances cast upon me after\r\nbeing on board a week or so were sufficient to reveal his enmity—a\r\nfeeling quickened by my undisguised companionship with Long Ghost, whom\r\nhe both feared and cordially hated. Guy’s relations with the consul\r\nreadily explains the latter’s hostility.\r\n\r\nThe examination over, Wilson and his friends advanced to the doorway;\r\nwhen the former, assuming a severe expression, pronounced our\r\nperverseness infatuation in the extreme. Nor was there any hope left:\r\nour last chance for pardon was gone. Even were we to become contrite\r\nand crave permission to return to duty, it would not now be permitted.\r\n\r\n“Oh! get along with your gammon, counsellor,” exclaimed Black Dan,\r\nabsolutely indignant that his understanding should be thus insulted.\r\n\r\nQuite enraged, Wilson bade him hold his peace; and then, summoning a\r\nfat old native to his side, addressed him in Tahitian, giving\r\ndirections for leading us away to a place of safe keeping.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJJFYVWHFREQ56Q3P64W9","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1H7Y803CZ7X80F0QFHZ","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKWR3TPZ7DBR27211C722","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:19.199Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:26.383Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
