Everyone knows that, so long as the occasion\r\nlasts, there is no stronger bond of sympathy and good feeling among men\r\nthan getting tipsy together. And how earnestly, nay, movingly, a brace\r\nof worthies, thus employed, will endeavour to shed light upon, and\r\nelucidate their mystical ideas!\r\n\r\nFancy Varvy and the doctor, then, lovingly tippling, and brimming over\r\nwith a desire to become better acquainted; the doctor politely bent\r\nupon carrying on the conversation in the language of his host, and the\r\nold hermit persisting in trying to talk English. The result was that,\r\nbetween the two, they made such a fricassee of vowels and consonants\r\nthat it was enough to turn one’s brain.\r\n\r\nThe next morning, on waking, I heard a voice from the tombs. It was the\r\ndoctor solemnly pronouncing himself a dead man. He was sitting up, with\r\nboth hands clasped over his forehead, and his pale face a thousand\r\ntimes paler than ever.\r\n\r\n“That infernal stuff has murdered me!” he cried. “Heavens! my head’s\r\nall wheels and springs, like the automaton chess-player! What’s to be\r\ndone, Paul? I’m poisoned.”\r\n\r\nBut, after drinking a herbal draught concocted by our host, and eating\r\na light meal, at noon, he felt much better; so much so that he declared\r\nhimself ready to continue our journey.\r\n\r\nWhen we came to start, the Yankee’s boots were missing; and, after a\r\ndiligent search, were not to be found. Enraged beyond measure, their\r\nproprietor said that Varvy must have stolen them; but, considering his\r\nhospitality, I thought this extremely improbable; though to whom else\r\nto impute the theft I knew not. The doctor maintained, however, that\r\none who was capable of drugging an innocent traveller with “Arva Tee”\r\nwas capable of anything.\r\n\r\nBut it was in vain that he stormed, and Varvy and I searched; the boots\r\nwere gone.\r\n\r\nWere it not for this mysterious occurrence, and Varvy’s detestable\r\nliquors, I would here recommend all travellers going round by the beach\r\nto Partoowye to stop at the Rock, and patronize the old gentleman—the\r\nmore especially as he entertains gratis.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 3"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJMW6K5EVYCY8NXD315S1","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1H7Y803CZ7X80F0QFHZ","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKWQHG45B3S5G2M49GTZP","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:19.187Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:32.180Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
