Upon perceiving\r\ntheir master they withdrew, Francesco making a smiling congé, and the\r\nSpaniard, without condescending to notice it, fastidiously remarking to\r\nhis companion that he relished not superfluous attendance.\r\n\r\nWithout companions, host and guest sat down, like a childless married\r\ncouple, at opposite ends of the table, Don Benito waving Captain Delano\r\nto his place, and, weak as he was, insisting upon that gentleman being\r\nseated before himself.\r\n\r\nThe negro placed a rug under Don Benito’s feet, and a cushion behind\r\nhis back, and then stood behind, not his master’s chair, but Captain\r\nDelano’s. At first, this a little surprised the latter.
