And it is to this remarkable difference of\r\ntemperature, for which there can be no equilibrium, that many seamen\r\nimpute the fogs on the coast of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland; but why\r\nthere should always be such ugly weather in the Gulf, is something that\r\nI do not know has ever been accounted for.\r\n\r\nIt is curious to dip one’s finger in a bucket full of the Gulf Stream,\r\nand find it so warm; as if the Gulf of Mexico, from whence this current\r\ncomes, were a great caldron or boiler, on purpose to keep warm the\r\nNorth Atlantic, which is traversed by it for a distance of two thousand\r\nmiles, as some large halls in winter are by hot air tubes.
