I have money to rig you all\r\nout—drop that hangman’s stuff there, and away! Pah! how it smells here!\r\nCome; up you jump!”\r\n\r\nI trembled with amazement and delight.\r\n\r\nLondon? it could not be!—and Harry—how kind of him! he was then indeed\r\nwhat he seemed. But instantly I thought of all the circumstances of the\r\ncase, and was eager to know what it was that had induced this sudden\r\ndeparture.\r\n\r\nIn reply my friend told me, that he had received a remittance, and had\r\nhopes of recovering a considerable sum, lost in some way that he chose\r\nto conceal.\r\n\r\n“But how am I to leave the ship, Harry?” said I; “they will not let me\r\ngo, will they? You had better leave me behind, after all; I don’t care\r\nvery much about going; and besides, I have no money to share the\r\nexpenses.”\r\n\r\nThis I said, only pretending indifference, for my heart was jumping all\r\nthe time.\r\n\r\n“Tut! my Yankee bantam,” said Harry; “look here!” and he showed me a\r\nhandful of gold.\r\n\r\n“But they are _yours,_ and not _mine,_ Harry,” said I.\r\n\r\n“Yours _and_ mine, my sweet fellow,” exclaimed Harry. “Come, sink the\r\nship, and let’s go!”\r\n\r\n“But you don’t consider, if I quit the ship, they’ll be sending a\r\nconstable after me, won’t they?”\r\n\r\n“What! and do you think, then, they value your services so highly? Ha!\r\nha!-Up, up, Wellingborough: I can’t wait.”\r\n\r\nTrue enough. I well knew that Captain Riga would not trouble himself\r\nmuch, if I _did_ take French leave of him. So, without further thought\r\nof the matter, I told Harry to wait a few moments, till the ship’s bell\r\nstruck four; at which time I used to go to supper, and be free for the\r\nrest of the day.\r\n\r\nThe bell struck; and off we went. As we hurried across the quay, and\r\nalong the dock walls, I asked Harry all about his intentions. He said,\r\nthat go to London he must, and to Bury St. Edmunds; but that whether he\r\nshould for any time remain at either place, he could not now tell; and\r\nit was by no means impossible, that in less than a week’s time we would\r\nbe back again in Liverpool, and ready for sea. But all he said was\r\nenveloped in a mystery that I did not much like; and I hardly know\r\nwhether I have repeated correctly what he said at the time.\r\n\r\nArrived at the _Golden Anchor,_ where Harry put up, he at once led me\r\nto his room, and began turning over the contents of his chest, to see\r\nwhat clothing he might have, that would fit me.\r\n\r\nThough he was some years my senior, we were about the same size—if any\r\nthing, I was larger than he; so, with a little stretching, a shirt,\r\nvest, and pantaloons were soon found to suit. As for a coat and hat,\r\nthose Harry ran out and bought without delay; returning with a loose,\r\nstylish sack-coat, and a sort of foraging cap, very neat, genteel, and\r\nunpretending.\r\n\r\nMy friend himself soon doffed his Guernsey frock, and stood before me,\r\narrayed in a perfectly plain suit, which he had bought on purpose that\r\nvery morning. I asked him why he had gone to that unnecessary expense,\r\nwhen he had plenty of other clothes in his chest. But he only winked,\r\nand looked knowing. This, again, I did not like. But I strove to drown\r\nugly thoughts.\r\n\r\nTill quite dark, we sat talking together; when, locking his chest, and\r\ncharging his landlady to look after it well, till he called, or sent\r\nfor it; Harry seized my arm, and we sallied into the street.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJS9Y36NY6PKHHHDXVFGP","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1GP71YDJ60P8SRH97MF","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKWG60YX1HMTGA61W6EC3","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:18.950Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:32.661Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
