He was rescued by the steward, and carried across the\r\ndeck with many moving expressions of love for his bearer. Tumbled into\r\nthe quarter-boat, he soon fell asleep, and waking about midnight,\r\nsomewhat sobered, went forward among the men. Here, to prepare for what\r\nfollows, we must leave him for a moment.\r\n\r\nIt was now plain enough that Jermin was by no means unwilling to take\r\nthe Julia to sea; indeed, there was nothing he so much desired; though\r\nwhat his reasons were, seeing our situation, we could only conjecture.\r\nNevertheless, so it was; and having counted much upon his rough\r\npopularity with the men to reconcile them to a short cruise under him,\r\nhe had consequently been disappointed in their behaviour. Still,\r\nthinking that they would take a different view of the matter, when they\r\ncame to know what fine times he had in store for them, he resolved upon\r\ntrying a little persuasion.\r\n\r\nSo on going forward, he put his head down the forecastle scuttle, and\r\nhailed us quite cordially, inviting us down into the cabin; where, he\r\nsaid, he had something to make merry withal. Nothing loth, we went; and\r\nthrowing ourselves along the transom, waited for the steward to serve\r\nus.\r\n\r\nAs the can circulated, Jermin, leaning on the table and occupying the\r\ncaptain’s arm-chair secured to the deck, opened his mind as bluntly and\r\nfreely as ever. He was by no means yet sober.\r\n\r\nHe told us we were acting very foolishly; that if we only stuck to the\r\nship, he would lead us all a jovial life of it; enumerating the casks\r\nstill remaining untapped in the Julia’s wooden cellar. It was even\r\nhinted vaguely that such a thing might happen as our not coming back\r\nfor the captain; whom he spoke of but lightly; asserting, what he had\r\noften said before, that he was no sailor.\r\n\r\nMoreover, and perhaps with special reference to Doctor Long Ghost and\r\nmyself, he assured us generally that, if there were any among us\r\nstudiously inclined, he would take great pleasure in teaching such the\r\nwhole art and mystery of navigation, including the gratuitous use of\r\nhis quadrant.\r\n\r\nI should have mentioned that, previous to this, he had taken the doctor\r\naside, and said something about reinstating him in the cabin with\r\naugmented dignity; beside throwing out a hint that I myself was in some\r\nway or other to be promoted. But it was all to no purpose; bent the men\r\nwere upon going ashore, and there was no moving them.\r\n\r\nAt last he flew into a rage—much increased by the frequency of his\r\npotations—and with many imprecations, concluded by driving everybody\r\nout of the cabin. We tumbled up the gangway in high good-humour.\r\n\r\nUpon deck everything looked so quiet that some of the most pugnacious\r\nspirits actually lamented that there was so little prospect of an\r\nexhilarating disturbance before morning. It was not five minutes,\r\nhowever, ere these fellows were gratified.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJHQ73FX1CD9D18EPP4J3","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1H7Y803CZ7X80F0QFHZ","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKW62X03HZEJW6JVTTJ5W","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:18.619Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:25.341Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
