Too nonsensical to think\r\nof! Who would murder Amasa Delano? His conscience is clean. There is\r\nsome one above. Fie, fie, Jack of the Beach! you are a child indeed; a\r\nchild of the second childhood, old boy; you are beginning to dote and\r\ndrule, I’m afraid.”\r\n\r\nLight of heart and foot, he stepped aft, and there was met by Don\r\nBenito’s servant, who, with a pleasing expression, responsive to his\r\nown present feelings, informed him that his master had recovered from\r\nthe effects of his coughing fit, and had just ordered him to go present\r\nhis compliments to his good guest, Don Amasa, and say that he (Don\r\nBenito) would soon have the happiness to rejoin him.\r\n\r\nThere now, do you mark that? again thought Captain Delano, walking the\r\npoop. What a donkey I was. This kind gentleman who here sends me his\r\nkind compliments, he, but ten minutes ago, dark-lantern in had, was\r\ndodging round some old grind-stone in the hold, sharpening a hatchet\r\nfor me, I thought. Well, well; these long calms have a morbid effect on\r\nthe mind, I’ve often heard, though I never believed it before. Ha!\r\nglancing towards the boat; there’s Rover; good dog; a white bone in her\r\nmouth. A pretty big bone though, seems to me.—What? Yes, she has fallen\r\nafoul of the bubbling tide-rip there. It sets her the other way, too,\r\nfor the time. Patience.\r\n\r\nIt was now about noon, though, from the grayness of everything, it\r\nseemed to be getting towards dusk.\r\n\r\nThe calm was confirmed. In the far distance, away from the influence of\r\nland, the leaden ocean seemed laid out and leaded up, its course\r\nfinished, soul gone, defunct. But the current from landward, where the\r\nship was, increased; silently sweeping her further and further towards\r\nthe tranced waters beyond.\r\n\r\nStill, from his knowledge of those latitudes, cherishing hopes of a\r\nbreeze, and a fair and fresh one, at any moment, Captain Delano,\r\ndespite present prospects, buoyantly counted upon bringing the San\r\nDominick safely to anchor ere night. The distance swept over was\r\nnothing; since, with a good wind, ten minutes’ sailing would retrace\r\nmore than sixty minutes, drifting. Meantime, one moment turning to mark\r\n“Rover” fighting the tide-rip, and the next to see Don Benito\r\napproaching, he continued walking the poop.\r\n\r\nGradually he felt a vexation arising from the delay of his boat; this\r\nsoon merged into uneasiness; and at last—his eye falling continually,\r\nas from a stage-box into the pit, upon the strange crowd before and\r\nbelow him, and, by-and-by, recognizing there the face—now composed to\r\nindifference—of the Spanish sailor who had seemed to beckon from the\r\nmain-chains—something of his old trepidations returned.\r\n\r\nAh, thought he—gravely enough—this is like the ague: because it went\r\noff, it follows not that it won’t come back.\r\n\r\nThough ashamed of the relapse, he could not altogether subdue it; and\r\nso, exerting his good-nature to the utmost, insensibly he came to a\r\ncompromise.\r\n\r\nYes, this is a strange craft; a strange history, too, and strange folks\r\non board. But—nothing more.\r\n\r\nBy way of keeping his mind out of mischief till the boat should arrive,\r\nhe tried to occupy it with turning over and over, in a purely\r\nspeculative sort of way, some lesser peculiarities of the captain and\r\ncrew. Among others, four curious points recurred:\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 11"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AK2X9P0E5X4X6Z77F9M13","peer_type":"intro","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1F4D8P9BBX9AMGZ7TX7","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKVZGXQKYT8VPATT8FNJX","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AKVZGB4W6PNX80XH3R2Y0","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:18.416Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:25.492Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
