In his absence, Bembo, as next in rank, would command; there\r\nbeing nothing to do but keep the ship at a safe distance from the land.\r\nHe then sprang into the boat, and, with only the cook and steward as\r\noarsmen, steered for the shore.\r\n\r\nGuy’s thus leaving the ship in the men’s hands, contrary to the mate’s\r\nadvice, was another evidence of his simplicity; for at this particular\r\njuncture, had neither the doctor nor myself been aboard, there is no\r\ntelling what they might have done.\r\n\r\nFor the nonce, Bembo was captain; and, so far as mere seamanship was\r\nconcerned, he was as competent to command as anyone. In truth, a better\r\nseaman never swore.
