He paused. The sound of the hatchet-polishing fell\r\non his ears. He cast another swift side-look at the two. They had the\r\nair of conspirators. In connection with the late questionings, and the\r\nincident of the young sailor, these things now begat such return of\r\ninvoluntary suspicion, that the singular guilelessness of the American\r\ncould not endure it. Plucking up a gay and humorous expression, he\r\ncrossed over to the two rapidly, saying:—“Ha, Don Benito, your black\r\nhere seems high in your trust; a sort of privy-counselor, in fact.”\r\n\r\nUpon this, the servant looked up with a good-natured grin, but the\r\nmaster started as from a venomous bite. It was a moment or two before\r\nthe Spaniard sufficiently recovered himself to reply; which he did, at\r\nlast, with cold constraint:—“Yes, Señor, I have trust in Babo.”\r\n\r\nHere Babo, changing his previous grin of mere animal humor into an\r\nintelligent smile, not ungratefully eyed his master.\r\n\r\nFinding that the Spaniard now stood silent and reserved, as if\r\ninvoluntarily, or purposely giving hint that his guest’s proximity was\r\ninconvenient just then, Captain Delano, unwilling to appear uncivil\r\neven to incivility itself, made some trivial remark and moved off;\r\nagain and again turning over in his mind the mysterious demeanor of Don\r\nBenito Cereno.\r\n\r\nHe had descended from the poop, and, wrapped in thought, was passing\r\nnear a dark hatchway, leading down into the steerage, when, perceiving\r\nmotion there, he looked to see what moved. The same instant there was a\r\nsparkle in the shadowy hatchway, and he saw one of the Spanish sailors,\r\nprowling there hurriedly placing his hand in the bosom of his frock, as\r\nif hiding something. Before the man could have been certain who it was\r\nthat was passing, he slunk below out of sight. But enough was seen of\r\nhim to make it sure that he was the same young sailor before noticed in\r\nthe rigging.\r\n\r\nWhat was that which so sparkled? thought Captain Delano. It was no\r\nlamp—no match—no live coal. Could it have been a jewel? But how come\r\nsailors with jewels?—or with silk-trimmed under-shirts either? Has he\r\nbeen robbing the trunks of the dead cabin-passengers? But if so, he\r\nwould hardly wear one of the stolen articles on board ship here. Ah,\r\nah—if, now, that was, indeed, a secret sign I saw passing between this\r\nsuspicious fellow and his captain awhile since; if I could only be\r\ncertain that, in my uneasiness, my senses did not deceive me, then—\r\n\r\nHere, passing from one suspicious thing to another, his mind revolved\r\nthe strange questions put to him concerning his ship.\r\n\r\nBy a curious coincidence, as each point was recalled, the black wizards\r\nof Ashantee would strike up with their hatchets, as in ominous comment\r\non the white stranger’s thoughts. Pressed by such enigmas and portents,\r\nit would have been almost against nature, had not, even into the least\r\ndistrustful heart, some ugly misgivings obtruded.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AK2X9P0E5X4X6Z77F9M13","peer_type":"intro","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1F4D8P9BBX9AMGZ7TX7","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKVCX1QVR9RJV0WVNMB4R","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AKVDD3GR4BTS02GAX6V4Q","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:17.821Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:25.042Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
