It is really wonderful how many names\r\nthere are in the world. There is no counting the names, that surgeons\r\nand anatomists give to the various parts of the human body; which,\r\nindeed, is something like a ship; its bones being the stiff\r\nstanding-rigging, and the sinews the small running ropes, that manage\r\nall the motions.\r\n\r\nI wonder whether mankind could not get along without all these names,\r\nwhich keep increasing every day, and hour, and moment; till at last the\r\nvery air will be full of them; and even in a great plain, men will be\r\nbreathing each other’s breath, owing to the vast multitude of words\r\nthey use, that consume all the air, just as lamp-burners do gas. But\r\npeople seem to have a great love for names; for to know a great many\r\nnames, seems to look like knowing a good many things; though I should\r\nnot be surprised, if there were a great many more names than things in\r\nthe world. But I must quit this rambling, and return to my story.\r\n\r\nAt last we hoisted the stun’-sails up to the top-sail yards, and as\r\nsoon as the vessel felt them, she gave a sort of bound like a horse,\r\nand the breeze blowing more and more, she went plunging along, shaking\r\noff the foam from her bows, like foam from a bridle-bit. Every mast and\r\ntimber seemed to have a pulse in it that was beating with life and joy;\r\nand I felt a wild exulting in my own heart, and felt as if I would be\r\nglad to bound along so round the world.\r\n\r\nThen was I first conscious of a wonderful thing in me, that responded\r\nto all the wild commotion of the outer world; and went reeling on and\r\non with the planets in their orbits, and was lost in one delirious\r\nthrob at the center of the All. A wild bubbling and bursting was at my\r\nheart, as if a hidden spring had just gushed out there; and my blood\r\nran tingling along my frame, like mountain brooks in spring freshets.\r\n\r\nYes! yes! give me this glorious ocean life, this salt-sea life, this\r\nbriny, foamy life, when the sea neighs and snorts, and you breathe the\r\nvery breath that the great whales respire! Let me roll around the\r\nglobe, let me rock upon the sea; let me race and pant out my life, with\r\nan eternal breeze astern, and an endless sea before!\r\n\r\nBut how soon these raptures abated, when after a brief idle interval,\r\nwe were again set to work, and I had a vile commission to clean out the\r\nchicken coops, and make up the beds of the pigs in the long-boat.\r\n\r\nMiserable dog’s life is this of the sea! commanded like a slave, and\r\nset to work like an ass! vulgar and brutal men lording it over me, as\r\nif I were an African in Alabama. Yes, yes, blow on, ye breezes, and\r\nmake a speedy end to this abominable voyage!\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 3"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJQ10MVYCHA419N8ERY5B","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1GP71YDJ60P8SRH97MF","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKV2V58V9ZYXZD1FB8B4K","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:17.502Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:26.139Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
