Then there was a great\r\nuproar; the sailors came running up on deck; and the chief mate ran\r\nforward, and learning what had happened, began to yell out his orders\r\nabout the sails and yards; and we all went to pulling and hauling the\r\nropes, till at last the ship lay almost still on the water. Then they\r\nloosed a boat, which kept pulling round the ship for more than an hour,\r\nbut they never caught sight of the man. It seemed that he was one of\r\nthe sailors who had been brought aboard dead drunk, and tumbled into\r\nhis bunk by his landlord; and there he had lain till now. He must have\r\nsuddenly waked up, I suppose, raging mad with the delirium tremens, as\r\nthe chief mate called it, and finding himself in a strange silent\r\nplace, and knowing not how he had got there, he rushed on deck, and so,\r\nin a fit of frenzy, put an end to himself.\r\n\r\nThis event, happening at the dead of night, had a wonderfully solemn\r\nand almost awful effect upon me. I would have given the whole world,\r\nand the sun and moon, and all the stars in heaven, if they had been\r\nmine, had I been safe back at Mr. Jones’, or still better, in my home\r\non the Hudson River. I thought it an ill-omened voyage, and railed at\r\nthe folly which had sent me to sea, sore against the advice of my best\r\nfriends, that is to say, my mother and sisters.\r\n\r\nAlas! poor Wellingborough, thought I, you will never see your home any\r\nmore. And in this melancholy mood I went below, when the watch had\r\nexpired, which happened soon after. But to my terror, I found that the\r\nsuicide had been occupying the very bunk which I had appropriated to\r\nmyself, and there was no other place for me to sleep in. The thought of\r\nlying down there now, seemed too horrible to me, and what made it\r\nworse, was the way in which the sailors spoke of my being frightened.\r\nAnd they took this opportunity to tell me what a hard and wicked life I\r\nhad entered upon, and how that such things happened frequently at sea,\r\nand they were used to it. But I did not believe this; for when the\r\nsuicide came rushing and shrieking up the scuttle, they looked as\r\nfrightened as I did; and besides that, and what makes their being\r\nfrightened still plainer, is the fact, that if they had had any\r\npresence of mind, they could have prevented his plunging overboard,\r\nsince he brushed right by them. However, they lay in their bunks\r\nsmoking, and kept talking on some time in this strain, and advising me\r\nas soon as ever I got home to pin my ears back, so as not to hold the\r\nwind, and sail straight away into the interior of the country, and\r\nnever stop until deep in the bush, far off from the least running\r\nbrook, never mind how shallow, and out of sight of even the smallest\r\npuddle of rainwater.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJQ10H8AX91TYTME9FFWW","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1GP71YDJ60P8SRH97MF","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKTGPAWQQP8ARXRD0GQ45","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:16.918Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:25.231Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
