To use a hyperbolical phrase of Shorty’s, “It was ’ot enough\r\nto melt the nose h’off a brass monkey.”\r\n\r\nReturning to the house, Shorty, assisted by old Tonoi, cooked the\r\ndinner; and, after we had all partaken thereof, both the Cockney and\r\nZeke threw themselves into one of the hammocks, inviting us to occupy\r\nthe other. Thinking it no bad idea, we did so; and, after skirmishing\r\nwith the mosquitoes, managed to fall into a doze. As for the planters,\r\nmore accustomed to “Nooning,” they, at once, presented a nuptial back\r\nto each other; and were soon snoring away at a great rate. Tonoi\r\nsnoozed on a mat, in one corner.\r\n\r\nAt last, we were roused by Zeke’s crying out, “Up b’ys; up! rise, and\r\nshine; time to get at it agin!”\r\n\r\nLooking at the doctor, I perceived, very plainly, that he had decided\r\nupon something.\r\n\r\nIn a languid voice, he told Zeke that he was not very well: indeed,\r\nthat he had not been himself for some time past; though a little rest,\r\nno doubt, would recruit him. The Yankee thinking, from this, that our\r\nvaluable services might be lost to him altogether, were he too hard\r\nupon us at the outset, at once begged us both to consult our own\r\nfeelings, and not exert ourselves for the present, unless we felt like\r\nit. Then—without recognizing the fact that my comrade claimed to be\r\nactually unwell—he simply suggested that, since he was so tired, he had\r\nbetter, perhaps, swing in his hammock for the rest of the day. If\r\nagreeable, however, I myself might accompany him upon a little\r\nbullock-hunting excursion in the neighbouring hills. In this\r\nproposition, I gladly acquiesced; though Peter, who was a great\r\nsportsman, put on a long face. The muskets and ammunition were\r\nforthwith got from overhead; and, everything being then ready, Zeke\r\ncried out, “Tonoi! come; aramai! (get up) we want you for pilot.\r\nShorty, my lad, look arter things, you know; and if you likes, why,\r\nthere’s them roots in the field yonder.”\r\n\r\nHaving thus arranged his domestic affairs to please himself, though\r\nlittle to Shorty’s satisfaction, I thought, he slung his powder-horn\r\nover his shoulder, and we started. Tonoi was, at once, sent on in\r\nadvance; and leaving the plantation, he struck into a path which led\r\ntoward the mountains.\r\n\r\nAfter hurrying through the thickets for some time, we came out into the\r\nsunlight, in an open glade, just under the shadow of the hills. Here,\r\nZeke pointed aloft to a beetling crag far distant, where a bullock,\r\nwith horns thrown back, stood like a statue.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 3"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJM0K7QP7RWE0EFXH0T20","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1H7Y803CZ7X80F0QFHZ","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKT6K7DSE5NFBM7EECRFS","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:16.595Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:30.043Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
