The mate had a wooden leg, and\r\nhobbled about with a crooked cane like a spiral staircase. There was a\r\ndeal of swearing on board of this craft, which was rendered the more\r\nreprehensible when she came to moor alongside the Floating Chapel.\r\n\r\nThis was the hull of an old sloop-of-war, which had been converted into\r\na mariner’s church. A house had been built upon it, and a steeple took\r\nthe place of a mast. There was a little balcony near the base of the\r\nsteeple, some twenty feet from the water; where, on week-days, I used\r\nto see an old pensioner of a tar, sitting on a camp-stool, reading his\r\nBible. On Sundays he hoisted the Bethel flag, and like the _muezzin_ or\r\ncryer of prayers on the top of a Turkish mosque, would call the\r\nstrolling sailors to their devotions; not officially, but on his own\r\naccount; conjuring them not to make fools of themselves, but muster\r\nround the pulpit, as they did about the capstan on a man-of-war. This\r\nold worthy was the sexton. I attended the chapel several times, and\r\nfound there a very orderly but small congregation. The first time I\r\nwent, the chaplain was discoursing on future punishments, and making\r\nallusions to the Tartarean Lake; which, coupled with the pitchy smell\r\nof the old hull, summoned up the most forcible image of the thing which\r\nI ever experienced.\r\n\r\nThe floating chapels which are to be found in some of the docks, form\r\none of the means which have been tried to induce the seamen visiting\r\nLiverpool to turn their thoughts toward serious things. But as very few\r\nof them ever think of entering these chapels, though they might pass\r\nthem twenty times in the day, some of the clergy, of a Sunday, address\r\nthem in the open air, from the corners of the quays, or wherever they\r\ncan procure an audience.\r\n\r\nWhenever, in my Sunday strolls, I caught sight of one of these\r\ncongregations, I always made a point of joining it; and would find\r\nmyself surrounded by a motley crowd of seamen from all quarters of the\r\nglobe, and women, and lumpers, and dock laborers of all sorts.\r\nFrequently the clergyman would be standing upon an old cask, arrayed in\r\nfull canonicals, as a divine of the Church of England. Never have I\r\nheard religious discourses better adapted to an audience of men, who,\r\nlike sailors, are chiefly, if not only, to be moved by the plainest of\r\nprecepts, and demonstrations of the misery of sin, as conclusive and\r\nundeniable as those of Euclid. No mere rhetoric avails with such men;\r\nfine periods are vanity. You can not touch them with tropes. They need\r\nto be pressed home by plain facts.\r\n\r\nAnd such was generally the mode in which they were addressed by the\r\nclergy in question: who, taking familiar themes for their discourses,\r\nwhich were leveled right at the wants of their auditors, always\r\nsucceeded in fastening their attention. In particular, the two great\r\nvices to which sailors are most addicted, and which they practice to\r\nthe ruin of both body and soul; these things, were the most enlarged\r\nupon. And several times on the docks, I have seen a robed clergyman\r\naddressing a large audience of women collected from the notorious lanes\r\nand alleys in the neighborhood.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJRKN5YQS3X41WTP2R4PQ","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1GP71YDJ60P8SRH97MF","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKT5V8DRDMETS9HQB1XQ2","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AKT5VMWR4W5XF0R9ZBQEK","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:16.571Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:30.846Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
