Upon Dominora a baleful glare was\r\nresting.\r\n\r\n“Thrice cursed flames!” cried Media. “Is Mardi to be one conflagration?\r\nHow it crackles, forks, and roars!—Is this our funeral pyre?”\r\n\r\n“Recline, recline, my lord,” said Babbalanja. “Fierce flames are ever\r\nbrief—a song, sweet Yoomy! Your pipe, old Mohi! Greater fires than this\r\nhave ere now blazed in Mardi. Let us be calm;—the isles were made to\r\nburn;—Braid-Beard! hereafter, in some quiet cell, of this whole scene\r\nyou will but make one chapter;—come, digest it now.”\r\n\r\n“My face is scorched,” cried Media.\r\n\r\n“The last, last day!” cried Mohi.\r\n\r\n“Not so, old man,” said Babbalanja, “when that day dawns, ’twill dawn\r\nserene. Be calm, be calm, my potent lord.”\r\n\r\n“Talk not of calm brows in storm-time!” cried Media fiercely. “See! how\r\nthe flames blow over upon Dominora!”\r\n\r\n“Yet the fires they kindle there are soon extinguished,” said\r\nBabbalanja. “No, no; Dominora ne’er can burn with Franko’s fires; only\r\nthose of her own kindling may consume her.”\r\n\r\n“Away! Away!” cried Media. “We may not touch Porpheero now.—Up sails!\r\nand westward be our course.”\r\n\r\nSo dead before the blast, we scudded.\r\n\r\nMorning broke, showing no sign of land.\r\n\r\n“Hard must it go with Franko’s king,” said Media, “when his people rise\r\nagainst him with the red volcanoes. Oh, for a foot to crush them! Hard,\r\ntoo, with all who rule in broad Porpheero. And may she we seek, survive\r\nthis conflagration!”\r\n\r\n“My lord,” said Babbalanja, “where’ere she hide, ne’er yet did Yillah\r\nlurk in this Porpheero; nor have we missed the maiden, noble Taji! in\r\nnot touching at its shores.”\r\n\r\n“This fire must make a desert of the land,” said Mohi; “burn up and\r\nbury all her tilth.”\r\n\r\n“Yet, Mohi, vineyards flourish over buried villages,” murmured Yoomy.\r\n\r\n“True, minstrel,” said Babbalanja, “and prairies are purified by fire.\r\nAshes breed loam. Nor can any skill make the same surface forever\r\nfruitful. In all times past, things have been overlaid; and though the\r\nfirst fruits of the marl are wild and poisonous, the palms at last\r\nspring forth; and once again the tribes repose in shade. My lord, if\r\ncalms breed storms, so storms calms; and all this dire commotion must\r\neventuate in peace. It may be, that Perpheero’s future has been cheaply\r\nwon.”\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJTNYE9R069VZZMV53ADT","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1954N2G0NAERBNJXEX9","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKSZYKVPR0TMSHR09V257","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:16.379Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:24.731Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
