But as the sun was\r\nsetting by the time the boat came alongside, we got our offshore tacks\r\naboard and stood away for an offing. About daybreak we wore, and ran\r\nin, and by the time the sun was well up, entered the long, narrow\r\nchannel dividing the islands of La Dominica and St. Christina.\r\n\r\nOn one hand was a range of steep green bluffs hundreds of feet high,\r\nthe white huts of the natives here and there nestling like birds’ nests\r\nin deep clefts gushing with verdure. Across the water, the land rolled\r\naway in bright hillsides, so warm and undulating that they seemed\r\nalmost to palpitate in the sun. On we swept, past bluff and grove,\r\nwooded glen and valley, and dark ravines lighted up far inland with\r\nwild falls of water. A fresh land-breeze filled our sails, the embayed\r\nwaters were gentle as a lake, and every wave broke with a tinkle\r\nagainst our coppered prow.\r\n\r\nOn gaining the end of the channel we rounded a point, and came full\r\nupon the bay of Hannamanoo. This is the only harbour of any note about\r\nthe island, though as far as a safe anchorage is concerned it hardly\r\ndeserves the title.\r\n\r\nBefore we held any communication with the shore, an incident occurred\r\nwhich may convey some further idea of the character of our crew.\r\n\r\nHaving approached as near the land as we could prudently, our headway\r\nwas stopped, and we awaited the arrival of a canoe which was coming out\r\nof the bay. All at once we got into a strong current, which swept us\r\nrapidly toward a rocky promontory forming one side of the harbour. The\r\nwind had died away; so two boats were at once lowered for the purpose\r\nof pulling the ship’s head round. Before this could be done, the eddies\r\nwere whirling upon all sides, and the rock so near that it seemed as if\r\none might leap upon it from the masthead. Notwithstanding the\r\nspeechless fright of the captain, and the hoarse shouts of the\r\nunappalled Jennin, the men handled the ropes as deliberately as\r\npossible, some of them chuckling at the prospect of going ashore, and\r\nothers so eager for the vessel to strike, that they could hardly\r\ncontain themselves. Unexpectedly a countercurrent befriended us, and\r\nassisted by the boats we were soon out of danger.\r\n\r\nWhat a disappointment for our crew! All their little plans for swimming\r\nashore from the wreck, and having a fine time of it for the rest of\r\ntheir days, thus cruelly nipped in the bud.\r\n\r\nSoon after, the canoe came alongside. In it were eight or ten natives,\r\ncomely, vivacious-looking youths, all gesture and exclamation; the red\r\nfeathers in their head-bands perpetually nodding. With them also came a\r\nstranger, a renegade from Christendom and humanity—a white man, in the\r\nSouth Sea girdle, and tattooed in the face. A broad blue band stretched\r\nacross his face from ear to ear, and on his forehead was the taper\r\nfigure of a blue shark, nothing but fins from head to tail.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJG794QZMVBX5E2S0JVEC","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1H7Y803CZ7X80F0QFHZ","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKSKJCAMK9NABF5WJ5N3W","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:15.986Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:22.704Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
