The object of\r\nthis, as we learned, was to procure, if possible, several English\r\nsailors, who, according to the commander of the corvette, had recently\r\ngone ashore there from an American whaler, and were desirous of\r\nshipping aboard one of their own country vessels.\r\n\r\nWe made the land in the afternoon, coming abreast of a shady glen\r\nopening from a deep bay, and winding by green denies far out of sight.\r\n“Hands by the weather-main-brace!” roared the mate, jumping up on the\r\nbulwarks; and in a moment the prancing Julia, suddenly arrested in her\r\ncourse, bridled her head like a steed reined in, while the foam flaked\r\nunder her bows.\r\n\r\nThis was the place where we expected to obtain the men; so a boat was\r\nat once got in readiness to go ashore. Now it was necessary to provide\r\na picked crew—men the least likely to abscond. After considerable\r\ndeliberation on the part of the captain and mate, four of the seamen\r\nwere pitched upon as the most trustworthy; or rather they were selected\r\nfrom a choice assortment of suspicious characters as being of an\r\ninferior order of rascality.\r\n\r\nArmed with cutlasses all round—the natives were said to be an ugly\r\nset—they were followed over the side by the invalid captain, who, on\r\nthis occasion, it seems, was determined to signalize himself.\r\nAccordingly, in addition to his cutlass, he wore an old boarding belt,\r\nin which was thrust a brace of pistols. They at once shoved off.\r\n\r\nMy friend Long Ghost had, among other things which looked somewhat\r\nstrange in a ship’s forecastle, a capital spy-glass, and on the present\r\noccasion we had it in use.\r\n\r\nWhen the boat neared the head of the inlet, though invisible to the\r\nnaked eye, it was plainly revealed by the glass; looking no bigger than\r\nan egg-shell, and the men diminished to pigmies.\r\n\r\nAt last, borne on what seemed a long flake of foam, the tiny craft shot\r\nup the beach amid a shower of sparkles. Not a soul was there. Leaving\r\none of their number by the water, the rest of the pigmies stepped\r\nashore, looking about them very circumspectly, pausing now and then\r\nhand to ear, and peering under a dense grove which swept down within a\r\nfew paces of the sea. No one came, and to all appearances everything\r\nwas as still as the grave. Presently he with the pistols, followed by\r\nthe rest flourishing their bodkins, entered the wood and were soon lost\r\nto view. They did not stay long; probably anticipating some\r\ninhospitable ambush were they to stray any distance up the glen.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJG6S4N6E6Q6Z9SHFPRAH","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1H7Y803CZ7X80F0QFHZ","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKSKJ848JN0D74BCBK01G","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:15.986Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:22.521Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
