And so, the world in the Koztanza.\r\n\r\nABRAZZA—Ay, plenty of dead-desert chapters there; horrible sands to\r\nwade through.\r\n\r\nMEDIA—Now, Babbalanja, away with your tropes; and tell us of the work,\r\ndirectly it was done. What did Lombardo then? Did he show it to any one\r\nfor an opinion?\r\n\r\nBABBALANJA—Yes, to Zenzori; who asked him where he picked up so much\r\ntrash; to Hanto, who bade him not be cast down, it was pretty good; to\r\nLucree, who desired to know how much he was going to get for it; to\r\nRoddi, who offered a suggestion.\r\n\r\nMEDIA—And what was that?\r\n\r\nBABBALANJA—That he had best make a faggot of the whole; and try again.\r\n\r\nABRAZZA—Very encouraging.\r\n\r\nMEDIA—Any one else?\r\n\r\nBABBALANJA—To Pollo; who, conscious his opinion was sought, was thereby\r\npuffed up; and marking the faltering of Lombardo’s voice, when the\r\nmanuscript was handed him, straightway concluded, that the man who\r\nstood thus trembling at the bar, must needs be inferior to the judge.\r\nBut his verdict was mild. After sitting up all night over the work; and\r\ndiligently taking notes:—“Lombardo, my friend! here, take your sheets.\r\nI have run through them loosely. You might have done better; but then\r\nyou might have done worse. Take them, my friend; I have put in some\r\ngood things for you:”\r\n\r\nMEDIA—And who was Pollo?\r\n\r\nBABBALANJA—Probably some one who lived in Lombardo’s time, and went by\r\nthat name. He is incidentally mentioned, and cursorily immortalized in\r\none of the posthumous notes to the Koztanza.\r\n\r\nMEDIA—What is said of him there?\r\n\r\nBABBALANJA—Not much. In a very old transcript of the work—that of\r\nAldina—the note alludes to a brave line in the text, and runs thus:—\r\n“Diverting to tell, it was this passage that an old prosodist, one\r\nPollo, claimed for his own. He maintained he made a free-will offering\r\nof it to Lombardo. Several things are yet extant of this Pollo, who\r\ndied some weeks ago. He seems to have been one of those, who would do\r\ngreat things if they could; but are content to compass the small. He\r\nimagined, that the precedence of authors he had established in his\r\nlibrary, was their Mardi order of merit. He condemned the sublime poems\r\nof Vavona to his lowermost shelf. ‘Ah,’ thought he, ‘how we library\r\nprinces, lord it over these beggarly authors!’ Well read in the history\r\nof their woes, Pollo pitied them all, particularly the famous; and\r\nwrote little essays of his own, which he read to himself.”\r\n\r\nMEDIA—Well: and what said Lombardo to those good friends of his,—\r\nZenzori, Hanto, and Roddi?\r\n\r\nBABBALANJA—Nothing. Taking home his manuscript, he glanced it over;\r\nmaking three corrections.\r\n\r\nABRAZZA—And what then?\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 6"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJW03Z0Q25AN0GF175AXF","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1954N2G0NAERBNJXEX9","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKSEZ8N6Q8YMSRHREVJHK","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AKSF033CQAPTKM7PZR707","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:15.840Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:28.236Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
