Now this was one of those\r\nsituations in which the voice of counsel, or reproof, comes with\r\npeculiar unction. Nor did Beauty let the opportunity slip. But the mate\r\nsaid nothing in reply, only foaming at the mouth and struggling to\r\nrise.\r\n\r\nJust then a thin tremor of a voice was heard from above. It was the\r\ncaptain; who, happening to ascend to the quarter-deck at the\r\ncommencement of the scuffle, would gladly have returned to the cabin,\r\nbut was prevented by the fear of ridicule. As the din increased, and it\r\nbecame evident that his officer was in serious trouble, he thought it\r\nwould never do to stand leaning over the bulwarks, so he made his\r\nappearance on the forecastle, resolved, as his best policy, to treat\r\nthe matter lightly.\r\n\r\n“Why, why,” he begun, speaking pettishly, and very fast, “what’s all\r\nthis about?—Mr. Jermin, Mr. Jermin—carpenter, carpenter; what are you\r\ndoing down there? Come on deck; come on deck.”\r\n\r\nWhereupon Doctor Long Ghost cries out in a squeak, “Ah! Miss Guy, is\r\nthat you? Now, my dear, go right home, or you’ll get hurt.”\r\n\r\n“Pooh, pooh! you, sir, whoever you are, I was not speaking to you; none\r\nof your nonsense. Mr. Jermin, I was talking to you; have the kindness\r\nto come on deck, sir; I want to see you.”\r\n\r\n“And how, in the devil’s name, am I to get there?” cried the mate,\r\nfuriously. “Jump down here, Captain Guy, and show yourself a man. Let\r\nme up, you Chips! unhand me, I say! Oh! I’ll pay you for this, some\r\nday! Come on, Captain Guy!”\r\n\r\nAt this appeal, the poor man was seized with a perfect spasm of\r\nfidgets. “Pooh, pooh, carpenter; have done with your nonsense! Let him\r\nup, sir; let him up! Do you hear? Let Mr. Jermm come on deck!”\r\n\r\n“Go along with you, Paper Jack,” replied Beauty; “this quarrel’s\r\nbetween the mate and me; so go aft, where you belong!”\r\n\r\nAs the captain once more dipped his head down the scuttle to make\r\nanswer, from an unseen hand he received, full in the face, the contents\r\nof a tin can of soaked biscuit and tea-leaves. The doctor was not far\r\noff just then. Without waiting for anything more, the discomfited\r\ngentleman, with both hands to his streaming face, retreated to the\r\nquarter-deck.\r\n\r\nA few moments more, and Jermin, forced to a compromise, followed after,\r\nin his torn frock and scarred face, looking for all the world as if he\r\nhad just disentangled himself from some intricate piece of machinery.\r\nFor about half an hour both remained in the cabin, where the mate’s\r\nrough tones were heard high above the low, smooth voice of the captain.\r\n\r\nOf all his conflicts with the men, this was the first in which Jermin\r\nhad been worsted; and he was proportionably enraged. Upon going\r\nbelow—as the steward afterward told us—he bluntly informed Guy that,\r\nfor the future, he might look out for his ship himself; for his part,\r\nhe had done with her, if that was the way he allowed his officers to be\r\ntreated. After many high words, the captain finally assured him that,\r\nthe first fitting opportunity, the carpenter should be cordially\r\nflogged; though, as matters stood, the experiment would be a hazardous\r\none. Upon this Jermin reluctantly consented to drop the matter for the\r\npresent; and he soon drowned all thoughts of it in a can of flip, which\r\nGuy had previously instructed the steward to prepare, as a sop to allay\r\nhis wrath.\r\n\r\nNothing more ever came of this.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJG70041RSNAQ01ZKRJCH","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1H7Y803CZ7X80F0QFHZ","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKRZ8W074P325C5M4QSHN","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:15.336Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:22.572Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
