And\r\nwith this fine conceit to inspire them, his poets-laureat composed some\r\nglorious old saltwater odes, enough to make your very soul sing to hear\r\nthem.\r\n\r\nBut though the rest of Mardi much delighted to list to such noble\r\nminstrelsy, they agreed not with Bello’s poets in deeming the lagoon\r\ntheir old monarch’s hereditary domain.\r\n\r\nOnce upon a time, the paddlers of the hump-backed king, meeting upon\r\nthe broad lagoon certain canoes belonging to the before-mentioned\r\nisland of Vivenza; these paddlers seized upon several of their\r\noccupants; and feeling their pulses, declared them born men of\r\nDominora; and therefore, not free to go whithersoever they would; for,\r\nunless they could somehow get themselves born over again, they must\r\nforever remain subject to Bello. Shed your hair; nay, your skin, if you\r\nwill, but shed your allegiance you can not; while you have bones, they\r\nare Bello’s. So, spite of all expostulations and attempts to prove\r\nalibis, these luckless paddlers were dragged into the canoes of\r\nDominora, and commanded to paddle home their captors.\r\n\r\nWhereof hearing, the men of Vivenza were thrown into a great ferment;\r\nand after a mighty pow-wow over their council fire, fitting out several\r\ndouble-keeled canoes, they sallied out to sea, in quest of those, whom\r\nthey styled the wholesale corsairs of Dominora.\r\n\r\nBut lucky perhaps it was, that at this juncture, in all parts of Mardi,\r\nthe fleets of the hump-backed king, were fighting, gunwale and gunwale,\r\nalongside of numerous foes; else there had borne down upon the canoes\r\nof the men of Vivenza so tremendous an armada, that the very swell\r\nunder its thousand prows might have flooded their scattered proas\r\nforever out of sight.\r\n\r\nAs it was, Bello dispatched a few of his smaller craft to seek out, and\r\nincidentally run down the enemy; and without returning home,\r\nstraightway proceed upon more important enterprises.\r\n\r\nBut it so chanced, that Bello’s crafts, one by one meeting the foe, in\r\nmost cases found the canoes of Vivenza much larger than their own; and\r\nmanned by more men, with hearts bold as theirs; whence, in the\r\nship-duels that ensued, they were worsted; and the canoes of Vivenza,\r\nlocking their yard-arms into those of the vanquished, very courteously\r\ngallanted them into their coral harbors.\r\n\r\nSolely imputing these victories to their superior intrepidity and\r\nskill, the people of Vivenza were exceedingly boisterous in their\r\ntriumph; raising such obstreperous peans, that they gave themselves\r\nhoarse throats; insomuch, that according to Mohi, some of the present\r\ngeneration are fain to speak through their noses.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 4"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJSXQC95HFRRK3M3VNQFC","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1954N2G0NAERBNJXEX9","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKRMJE0SR7425WNFTP7M3","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:14.994Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:23.840Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
