Sure, there’s naught heard but yonder murmuring surf; what\r\nother sound heard you?”\r\n\r\n“The thrilling of my soul’s monochord, my lord. But prick not your ears\r\nto hear it; that divine harmony is overheard by the rapt spirit alone;\r\nit comes not by the auditory nerves.”\r\n\r\n“No more, Azzageddi! No more of that. Look yonder!”\r\n\r\n“A most lovely wood, in truth. And methinks it is here the sage\r\nDoxodox, surnamed the Wise One, dwells.”\r\n\r\n“Hark, I hear the hootings of his owls,” said Mohi.\r\n\r\n“My lord, you must have read of him. He is said to have penetrated from\r\nthe zoned, to the unzoned principles. Shall we seek him out, that we\r\nmay hearken to his wisdom? Doubtless he knows many things, after which\r\nwe pant.”\r\n\r\nThe lagoon was calm, as we landed; not a breath stirred the plumes of\r\nthe trees; and as we entered the voiceless shades, lifting his hand,\r\nBabbalanja whispered:—“This silence is a fit introduction to the\r\nportals of Telestic lore. Somewhere, beneath this moss, lurks the\r\nmystic stone Mnizuris; whereby Doxodox hath attained unto a knowledge\r\nof the ungenerated essences. Nightly, he bathes his soul in\r\narchangelical circumlucencies. Oh, Doxodox! whip me the Strophalunian\r\ntop! Tell o’er thy Jynges!”\r\n\r\n“Down, Azzageddi! down!” cried Media. “Behold: there sits the Wise One;\r\nnow, for true wisdom!”\r\n\r\nFrom the voices of the party, the sage must have been aware of our\r\napproach: but seated on a green bank, beneath the shade of a red\r\nmulberry, upon the boughs of which, many an owl was perched, he seemed\r\nintent upon describing divers figures in the air, with a jet-black\r\nwand.\r\n\r\nAdvancing with much deference and humility, Babbalanja saluted him.\r\n\r\n“Oh wise Doxodox! Drawn hither by thy illustrious name, we seek\r\nadmittance to thy innermost wisdom. Of all Mardian, thou alone\r\ncomprehendest those arcane combinations, whereby to drag to day the\r\nmost deftly hidden things, present and to come. Thou knowest what we\r\nare, and what we shall be. We beseech thee, evoke thy Tselmns!”\r\n\r\n“Tetrads; Pentads; Hexads; Heptads; Ogdoads:—meanest thou those?”\r\n\r\n“New terms all!”\r\n\r\n“Foiled at thy own weapons,” said Media.\r\n\r\n“Then, if thou comprehendest not my nomenclature:—how my science? But\r\nlet me test thee in the portico.—Why is it, that as some things extend\r\nmore remotely than others; so, Quadammodotatives are larger than\r\nQualitatives; forasmuch, as Quadammodotatives extend to those things,\r\nwhich include the Quadammodotatives themselves.”\r\n\r\n“Azzageddi has found his match,” said Media.\r\n\r\n“Still posed, Babbalanja?” asked Mohi.\r\n\r\n“At a loss, most truly! But I beseech thee, wise Doxodox! instruct me\r\nin thy dialectics, that I may embrace thy more recondite lore.”\r\n\r\n“To begin then, my child:—all Dicibles reside in the mind.”\r\n\r\n“But what are Dicibles?” said Media.\r\n\r\n“Meanest thou, Perfect or Imperfect Dicibles?” Any kind you please;—\r\nbut what are they?”\r\n\r\n“Perfect Dicibles are of various sorts: Interrogative; Percontative;\r\nAdjurative; Optative; Imprecative; Execrative; Substitutive;\r\nCompellative; Hypothetical; and lastly, Dubious.”\r\n\r\n“Dubious enough! Azzageddi! forever, hereafter, hold thy peace.”\r\n\r\n“Ah, my children! I must go back to my Axioms.”\r\n\r\n“And what are they?” said old Mohi.\r\n\r\n“Of various sorts; which, again, are diverse. Thus: my contrary axioms\r\nare Disjunctive, and Subdisjunctive; and so, with the rest. So, too, in\r\ndegree, with my Syllogisms.”\r\n\r\n“And what of them?”\r\n\r\n“Did I not just hint what they were, my child? I repeat, they are of\r\nvarious sorts: Connex, and Conjunct, for example.”\r\n\r\n“And what of them?” persisted Mohi; while Babbalanja, arms folded,\r\nstood serious and mute; a sneer on his lip.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJVBQXDHHTJF6V7BF5247","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1954N2G0NAERBNJXEX9","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKR7A9ND2VE6F5TQRFEF5","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:14.562Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:26.952Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
