Served up with these, were\r\nsundry greens,—lichens, mosses, ferns, and fungi.\r\n\r\n“Now comes the New Red Sandstone sandwich: marly and magnesious, spread\r\nover with old patriarchs of crocodiles and alligators,—hard carving\r\nthese,—and prodigious lizards, spine-skewered, tails tied in bows, and\r\nswimming in saffron saucers.”\r\n\r\n“What next?” cried Media.\r\n\r\n“The Ool, or Oily sandwich:—rare gormandizing then; for oily it was\r\ncalled, because of fat old joints, and hams, and rounds, and barons of\r\nsea-beeves and walrusses, which then crowned the stratum-board. The\r\nsecond side-course—miocene—was out of course, flesh after fowl: marine\r\nmammalia,—seals, grampuses, and whales, served up with sea-weed on\r\ntheir flanks, hearts and kidneys deviled, and fins and flippers\r\nfriccasied. All very thee, my lord. The third side-course, the\r\npliocene, was goodliest of all:—whole-roasted elephants, rhinoceroses,\r\nand hippopotamuses, stuffed with boiled ostriches, condors,\r\ncassowaries, turkeys. Also barbacued mastodons and megatheriums,\r\ngallantly served up with fir-trees in their mouths, and tails\r\ncock-billed.\r\n\r\n“Thus fared the old diluvians: arrant gormandizers and beef-bolters. We\r\nMardians famish on the superficial strata of deposits; cracking our\r\njaws on walnuts, filberts, cocoa-nuts, and clams. My lord, I’ve done.”\r\n\r\n“And bravely done it is. Mohi tells us, that Mardi was made in six\r\ndays; but you, Babbalanja, have built it up from the bottom in less\r\nthan six minutes.”\r\n\r\n“Nothing for us geologists, my lord. At a word we turn you out whole\r\nsystems, suns, satellites, and asteroids included.
