Babbalanja!” cried Media from under a tree, “don’t be a\r\nduck, there, with your bill in the air; drop your metaphysics, man, and\r\nfall to on the solids. Do you hear?”\r\n\r\n“Come, philosopher,” said Mohi, handling a banana, “you will weigh more\r\nafter you have eaten.”\r\n\r\n“Come, list, Babbalanja,” cried Yoomy, “I am going to sing.”\r\n\r\n“Up! up! I say,” shouted Media again. “But go, old man, and wake him:\r\nrap on his head, and see whether he be in.”\r\n\r\nMohi, obeying, found him at home; and Babbalanja started up.\r\n\r\n“In Oro’s name, what ails you, philosopher? See you Paradise, that you\r\nlook so wildly?”\r\n\r\n“A Happy Life! a Happy Life!” cried Babbalanja, in an ecstasy. “My\r\nlord, I am lost in the dream of it, as here recorded. Marvelous book!\r\nits goodness transports me. Let me read:—‘I would bear the same mind,\r\nwhether I be rich or poor, whether I get or lose in the world. I will\r\nreckon benefits well placed as the fairest part of my possession, not\r\nvaluing them by number or weight, but by the profit and esteem of the\r\nreceiver; accounting myself never the poorer for any thing I give. What\r\nI do shall be done for conscience, not ostentation. I will eat and\r\ndrink, not to gratify my palate, but to satisfy nature. I will be\r\ncheerful to my friends, mild and placable to my enemies. I will prevent\r\nan honest request, if I can foresee it; and I will grant it, without\r\nasking. I will look upon the whole world as my country; and upon Oro,\r\nboth as the witness and the judge of my words and my deeds. I will live\r\nand die with this testimony: that I loved a good conscience; that I\r\nnever invaded another man’s liberty; and that I preserved my own. I\r\nwill govern my life and my thoughts, as if the whole world were to see\r\nthe one, and to read the other; for what does it signify, to make any\r\nthing a secret to my neighbor, when to Oro all our privacies are\r\nopen.’”\r\n\r\n“Very fine,” said Media.\r\n\r\n“The very spirit of the first followers of Alma, as recorded in the\r\nlegends,” said Mohi.\r\n\r\n“Inimitable,” said Yoomy.\r\n\r\nSaid Babbalanja, “Listen again:—‘Righteousness is sociable and gentle;\r\nfree, steady, and fearless; full of inexhaustible delights.’ And here\r\nagain, and here, and here:—The true felicity of life is to understand\r\nour duty to Oro.’—‘True joy is a serene and sober motion.’ And here,\r\nand here,—my lord, ’tis hard quoting from this book;—but listen—‘A\r\npeaceful conscience, honest thoughts, and righteous actions are\r\nblessings without end, satiety, or measure. The poor man wants many\r\nthings; the covetous man, all. It is not enough to know Oro, unless we\r\nobey him.’”\r\n\r\n“Alma all over,” cried Mohi; “sure, you read from his sayings?”\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJQT19TXW6TXGPSV7NZ3Q","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1954N2G0NAERBNJXEX9","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKNPZ4NB0CKHWQY14RW04","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:11.999Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:21.035Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
