The poor man wants many\r\nthings; the covetous man, all. It is not enough to know Oro, unless we\r\nobey him.’”\r\n\r\n“Alma all over,” cried Mohi; “sure, you read from his sayings?”\r\n\r\n“I read but odd sentences from one, who though he lived ages ago, never\r\nsaw, scarcely heard of Alma. And mark me, my lord, this time I\r\nimprovise nothing. What I have recited, Is here. Mohi, this book is\r\nmore marvelous than the prophecies. My lord, that a mere man, and a\r\nheathen, in that most heathenish time, should give utterance to such\r\nheavenly wisdom, seems more wonderful than that an inspired prophet\r\nshould reveal it. And is it not more divine in this philosopher, to\r\nlove righteousness for its own sake, and in view of annihilation, than\r\nfor pious sages to extol it as the means of everlasting felicity?”\r\n\r\n“Alas,” sighed Yoomy, “and does he not promise us any good thing, when\r\nwe are dead?”\r\n\r\n“He speaks not by authority. He but woos us to goodness and happiness\r\nhere.”\r\n\r\n“Then, Babbalanja,” said Media, “keep your treasure to yourself.\r\nWithout authority, and a full right hand, Righteousness better be\r\nsilent. Mardi’s religion must seem to come direct from Oro, and the\r\nmass of you mortals endeavor it not, except for a consideration,\r\npresent or to come.”\r\n\r\n“And call you that righteousness, my lord, which is but the price paid\r\ndown for something else?”\r\n\r\n“I called it not righteousness; it is religion so called. But let us\r\nprate no more of these things; with which I, a demi-god, have but\r\nlittle in common. It ever impairs my digestion. No more, Babbalanja.”\r\n\r\n“My lord! my lord! out of itself, Religion has nothing to bestow. Nor\r\nwill she save us from aught, but from the evil in ourselves. Her one\r\ngrand end is to make us wise; her only manifestations are reverence to\r\nOro and love to man; her only, but ample reward, herself. He who has\r\nthis, has all. He who has this, whether he kneel to an image of wood,\r\ncalling it Oro; or to an image of air, calling it the same; whether he\r\nfasts or feasts; laughs or weeps;—that man can be no richer. And this\r\nreligion, faith, virtue, righteousness, good, whate’er you will, I find\r\nin this book I hold. No written page can teach me more.”\r\n\r\n“Have you that, then, of which you speak, Babbalanja? Are you content,\r\nthere where you stand?”\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJQT19TXW6TXGPSV7NZ3Q","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1954N2G0NAERBNJXEX9","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKNPZG8W0NQW36XJ625KH","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AKNPST1TRZXZMJNRQVMGH","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:11.999Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:21.233Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
