Give us a seat among ye, friends.”\r\n\r\n“Oh, sit on your head!” answered a sullen fellow in the corner.\r\n\r\n“Come, come, no growling; we’re homeward-bound. Whoop, my hearties!”\r\n\r\n“Workhouse bound, you mean,” grumbled another sorry chap, in a darned\r\nshirt.\r\n\r\n“Oh, boys, don’t be down-hearted. Let’s keep up our spirits. Sing us a\r\nsong, one of ye, and I’ll give the chorus.”\r\n\r\n“Sing if ye like, but I’ll plug my ears, for one,” said still another\r\nsulky varlet, with the toes out of his sea-boots, while all the rest\r\nwith one roar of misanthropy joined him.\r\n\r\nBut Israel, riot to be daunted, began:\r\n\r\n“‘Cease, rude Boreas, cease your growling!’”\r\n\r\n“And you cease your squeaking, will ye?” cried a fellow in a banged\r\ntarpaulin. “Did ye get a ball in the windpipe, that ye cough that way,\r\nworse nor a broken-nosed old bellows? Have done with your groaning,\r\nit’s worse nor the death-rattle.”\r\n\r\n“Boys, is this the way you treat a watchmate” demanded Israel\r\nreproachfully, “trying to cheer up his friends? Shame on ye, boys.\r\nCome, let’s be sociable. Spin us a yarn, one of ye. Meantime, rub my\r\nback for me, another,” and very confidently he leaned against his\r\nneighbor.\r\n\r\n“Lean off me, will ye?” roared his friend, shoving him away.\r\n\r\n“But who _is_ this ere singing, leaning, yarn-spinning chap? Who are\r\nye? Be you a waister, or be you not?”\r\n\r\nSo saying, one of this peevish, sottish band staggered close up to\r\nIsrael. But there was a deck above and a deck below, and the lantern\r\nswung in the distance. It was too dim to see with critical exactness.\r\n\r\n“No such singing chap belongs to our gang, that’s flat,” he\r\ndogmatically exclaimed at last, after an ineffectual scrutiny. “Sail\r\nout of this!”\r\n\r\nAnd with a shove once more, poor Israel was ejected.\r\n\r\nBlackballed out of every club, he went disheartened on deck. So long,\r\nwhile light screened him at least, as he contented himself with\r\npromiscuously circulating, all was safe; it was the endeavor to\r\nfraternize with any one set which was sure to endanger him. At last,\r\nwearied out, he happened to find himself on the berth deck, where the\r\nwatch below were slumbering. Some hundred and fifty hammocks were on\r\nthat deck. Seeing one empty, he leaped in, thinking luck might yet some\r\nway befriend him. Here, at last, the sultry confinement put him fast\r\nasleep. He was wakened by a savage whiskerando of the other watch, who,\r\nseizing him by his waistband, dragged him most indecorously out,\r\nfuriously denouncing him for a skulker.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 4"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJJRQA5EDSW298W4T2SYR","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1DKC9HHJRKY25JZBEXW","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKMX9NJ5R2NA1J0CB913B","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AKMXAHRVRG03J7NX3PYJJ","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:11.178Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:17.609Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
