There stood\r\nthe grinning Man-in-the-Moon, his head just dodging into view over the\r\nrim of the sea:—Mephistopheles prompter of the stage.\r\n\r\nAided now a little by the planet, one of the consorts of the Richard,\r\nthe Pallas, hovering far outside the fight, dimly discerned the\r\nsuspicious form of a lonely vessel unknown to her. She resolved to\r\nengage it, if it proved a foe. But ere they joined, the unknown\r\nship—which proved to be the Scarborough—received a broadside at long\r\ngun’s distance from another consort of the Richard the Alliance. The\r\nshot whizzed across the broad interval like shuttlecocks across a great\r\nhall. Presently the battledores of both batteries were at work, and\r\nrapid compliments of shuttlecocks were very promptly exchanged. The\r\nadverse consorts of the two main belligerents fought with all the rage\r\nof those fiery seconds who in some desperate duels make their\r\nprincipal’s quarrel their own. Diverted from the Richard and the\r\nSerapis by this little by-play, the Man-in-the-Moon, all eager to see\r\nwhat it was, somewhat raised himself from his trap-door with an added\r\ngrin on his face. By this time, off sneaked the Alliance, and down\r\nswept the Pallas, at close quarters engaging the Scarborough; an\r\nencounter destined in less than an hour to end in the latter ship’s\r\nstriking her flag.\r\n\r\nCompared to the Serapis and the Richard, the Pallas and the Scarborough\r\nwere as two pages to two knights. In their immature way they showed the\r\nsame traits as their fully developed superiors.\r\n\r\nThe Man-in-the-Moon now raised himself still higher to obtain a better\r\nview of affairs.\r\n\r\nBut the Man-in-the-Moon was not the only spectator. From the high\r\ncliffs of the shore, and especially from the great promontory of\r\nFlamborough Head, the scene was witnessed by crowds of the islanders.\r\nAny rustic might be pardoned his curiosity in view of the spectacle,\r\npresented. Far in the indistinct distance fleets of frightened\r\nmerchantmen filled the lower air with their sails, as flakes of snow in\r\na snow-storm by night. Hovering undeterminedly, in another direction,\r\nwere several of the scattered consorts of Paul, taking no part in the\r\nfray. Nearer, was an isolated mist, investing the Pallas and\r\nScarborough—a mist slowly adrift on the sea, like a floating isle, and\r\nat intervals irradiated with sparkles of fire and resonant with the\r\nboom of cannon. Further away, in the deeper water, was a lurid cloud,\r\nincessantly torn in shreds of lightning, then fusing together again,\r\nonce more to be rent. As yet this lurid cloud was neither stationary\r\nnor slowly adrift, like the first-mentioned one; but, instinct with\r\nchaotic vitality, shifted hither and thither, foaming with fire, like a\r\nvaliant water-spout careering off the coast of Malabar.\r\n\r\nTo get some idea of the events enacting in that cloud, it will be\r\nnecessary to enter it; to go and possess it, as a ghost may rush into a\r\nbody, or the devils into the swine, which running down the steep place\r\nperished in the sea; just as the Richard is yet to do.\r\n\r\nThus far the Serapis and the Richard had been manoeuvring and chasing\r\nto each other like partners in a cotillion, all the time indulging in\r\nrapid repartee.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 4"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJJRQ4SKWG11NYNT96ERE","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1DKC9HHJRKY25JZBEXW","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKM4XENZMN8WXC3S46P0V","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AKMX68QECNP1665GAHKMM","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:10.395Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:16.940Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
