Where’s the rest of your gang?”\r\n\r\n“Captain Paul,” said Israel, “I believe I remember you. I believe I\r\noffered you my bed in Paris some months ago. How is Poor Richard?”\r\n\r\n“God! Is this the courier? The Yankee courier? But how now? in an\r\nEnglish revenue cutter?”\r\n\r\n“Impressed, sir; that’s the way.”\r\n\r\n“But where’s the rest of them?” demanded Paul, turning to the officer.\r\n\r\nThereupon the officer very briefly told Paul what Israel told him.\r\n\r\n“Are we to sink the cutter, sir?” said the gunner, now advancing\r\ntowards Captain Paul. “If it is to be done, now is the time. She is\r\nclose under us, astern; a few guns pointed downwards will settle her\r\nlike a shotted corpse.”\r\n\r\n“No. Let her drift into Penzance, an anonymous earnest of what the\r\nwhitesquall in Paul Jones intends for the future.”\r\n\r\nThen giving directions as to the course of the ship, with an order for\r\nhimself to be called at the first glimpse of a sail, Paul took Israel\r\ndown with him into his cabin.\r\n\r\n“Tell me your story now, my yellow lion. How was it all? Don’t stand,\r\nsit right down there on the transom. I’m a democratic sort of sea-king.\r\nPlump on the woolsack, I say, and spin the yarn. But hold; you want\r\nsome grog first.”\r\n\r\nAs Paul handed the flagon, Israel’s eye fell upon his hand.\r\n\r\n“You don’t wear any rings now, Captain, I see. Left them in Paris for\r\nsafety.”\r\n\r\n“Aye, with a certain marchioness there,” replied Paul, with a dandyish\r\nlook of sentimental conceit, which sat strangely enough on his\r\notherwise grim and Fejee air.\r\n\r\n“I should think rings would be somewhat inconvenient at sea,” resumed\r\nIsrael. “On my first voyage to the West Indies, I wore a girl’s ring on\r\nmy middle finger here, and it wasn’t long before, what with hauling wet\r\nropes, and what not, it got a kind of grown down into the flesh, and\r\npained me very bad, let me tell you, it hugged the finger so.”\r\n\r\n“And did the girl grow as close to your heart, lad?”\r\n\r\n“Ah, Captain, girls grow themselves off quicker than we grow them on.”\r\n\r\n“Some experience with the countesses as well as myself, eh? But the\r\nstory; wave your yellow mane, my lion—the story.”\r\n\r\nSo Israel went on and told the story in all particulars.\r\n\r\nAt its conclusion Captain Paul eyed him very earnestly. His wild,\r\nlonely heart, incapable of sympathizing with cuddled natures made\r\nhumdrum by long exemption from pain, was yet drawn towards a being, who\r\nin desperation of friendlessness, something like his own, had so\r\nfiercely waged battle against tyrannical odds.\r\n\r\n“Did you go to sea young, lad?”\r\n\r\n“Yes, pretty young.”\r\n\r\n“I went at twelve, from Whitehaven. Only so high,” raising his hand\r\nsome four feet from the deck. “I was so small, and looked so queer in\r\nmy little blue jacket, that they called me the monkey. They’ll call me\r\nsomething else before long.
