It was sunset; no Squire.\r\n\r\n“He must be very busy trying some sheep-stealer in the hall,” mused\r\nIsrael. “I hope he won’t forget all about me till to-morrow.”\r\n\r\nHe waited and listened; and listened and waited.\r\n\r\nAnother restless night; no sleep; morning came. The second day passed\r\nlike the first, and the night. On the third morning the flowers lay\r\nshrunken by his side. Drops of wet oozing through the air- slits, fell\r\ndully on the stone floor. He heard the dreary beatings of the tree’s\r\nleaves against the mouths of the griffins, bedashing them with the\r\nspray of the rain-storm without. At intervals a burst of thunder rolled\r\nover his head, and lightning flashing down through the slits, lit up\r\nthe cell with a greenish glare, followed by sharp splashings and\r\nrattlings of the redoubled rain-storm.\r\n\r\n“This is the morning of the third day,” murmured Israel to himself; “he\r\nsaid he would at the furthest come to me on the morning of the third\r\nday. This is it. Patience, he will be here yet. Morning lasts till\r\nnoon.”\r\n\r\nBut, owing to the murkiness of the day, it was very hard to tell when\r\nnoon came. Israel refused to credit that noon had come and gone, till\r\ndusk set plainly in. Dreading he knew not what, he found himself buried\r\nin the darkness of still another night. However patient and hopeful\r\nhitherto, fortitude now presently left him. Suddenly, as if some\r\ncontagious fever had seized him, he was afflicted with strange\r\nenchantments of misery, undreamed of till now.\r\n\r\nHe had eaten all the beef, but there was bread and water sufficient to\r\nlast, by economy, for two or three days to come. It was not the pang of\r\nhunger then, but a nightmare originating in his mysterious\r\nincarceration, which appalled him. All through the long hours of this\r\nparticular night, the sense of being masoned up in the wall, grew, and\r\ngrew, and grew upon him, till again and again he lifted himself\r\nconvulsively from the floor, as if vast blocks of stone had been laid\r\non him; as if he had been digging a deep well, and the stonework with\r\nall the excavated earth had caved in upon him, where he burrowed ninety\r\nfeet beneath the clover. In the blind tomb of the midnight he stretched\r\nhis two arms sideways, and felt as if coffined at not being able to\r\nextend them straight out, on opposite sides, for the narrowness of the\r\ncell. He seated himself against one side of the wall, crosswise with\r\nthe cell, and pushed with his feet at the opposite wall. But still\r\nmindful of his promise in this extremity, he uttered no cry. He mutely\r\nraved in the darkness. The delirious sense of the absence of light was\r\nsoon added to his other delirium as to the contraction of space. The\r\nlids of his eyes burst with impotent distension. Then he thought the\r\nair itself was getting unbearable. He stood up at the griffin slits,\r\npressing his lips far into them till he moulded his lips there, to suck\r\nthe utmost of the open air possible.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 5"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJJ20F155CN1VA4X6YHX3","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1DKC9HHJRKY25JZBEXW","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKJ9NN0DAR709TDGBARHB","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AKJYV9BVMF93283X4EECM","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:09.178Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:15.813Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
