The man of wisdom\r\nentered, with two small wads of paper in one hand, and several crackers\r\nand a bit of cheese in the other. There was such an eloquent air of\r\ninstantaneous dispatch about him, that Israel involuntarily sprang to\r\nhis boots, and, with two vigorous jerks, hauled them on, and then\r\nseizing his hat, like any bird, stood poised for his flight across the\r\nchannel.\r\n\r\n“Well done, my honest friend,” said the Doctor; “you have the papers in\r\nyour heel, I suppose.”\r\n\r\n“Ah,” exclaimed Israel, perceiving the mild irony; and in an instant\r\nhis boots were off again; when, without another word, the Doctor took\r\none boot, and Israel the other, and forthwith both parties proceeded to\r\nsecrete the documents.\r\n\r\n“I think I could improve the design,” said the sage, as,\r\nnotwithstanding his haste, he critically eyed the screwing apparatus of\r\nthe boot. “The vacancy should have been in the standing part of the\r\nheel, not in the lid. It should go with a spring, too, for better\r\ndispatch. I’ll draw up a paper on false heels one of these days, and\r\nsend it to a private reading at the Institute. But no time for it now.\r\nMy honest friend, it is now half past ten o’clock. At half past eleven\r\nthe diligence starts from the Place-du-Carrousel for Calais. Make all\r\nhaste till you arrive at Brentford. I have a little provender here for\r\nyou to eat in the diligence, as you will not have time for a regular\r\nmeal. A day-and-night courier should never be without a cracker in his\r\npocket. You will probably leave Brentford in a day or two after your\r\narrival there. Be wary, now, my good friend; heed well, that, if you\r\nare caught with these papers on British ground, you will involve both\r\nyourself and our Brentford friends in fatal calamities. Kick no man’s\r\nbox, never mind whose, in the way. Mind your own box. You can’t be too\r\ncautious, but don’t be too suspicious. God bless you, my honest friend.\r\nGo!”\r\n\r\nAnd, flinging the door open for his exit, the Doctor saw Israel dart\r\ninto the entry, vigorously spring down the stairs, and disappear with\r\nall celerity across the court into the vaulted way.\r\n\r\nThe man of wisdom stood mildly motionless a moment, with a look of\r\nsagacious, humane meditation on his face, as if pondering upon the\r\nchances of the important enterprise: one which, perhaps, might in the\r\nsequel affect the weal or woe of nations yet to come. Then suddenly\r\nclapping his hand to his capacious coat-pocket, dragged out a bit of\r\ncork with some hen’s feathers, and hurrying to his room, took out his\r\nknife, and proceeded to whittle away at a shuttlecock of an original\r\nscientific construction, which at some prior time he had promised to\r\nsend to the young Duchess D’Abrantes that very afternoon.\r\n\r\nSafely reaching Calais, at night, Israel stepped almost from the\r\ndiligence into the packet, and, in a few moments, was cutting the\r\nwater. As on the diligence he took an outside and plebeian seat, so,\r\nwith the same secret motive of preserving unsuspected the character\r\nassumed, he took a deck passage in the packet. It coming on to rain\r\nviolently, he stole down into the forecastle, dimly lit by a solitary\r\nswinging lamp, where were two men industriously smoking, and filling\r\nthe narrow hole with soporific vapors. These induced strange drowsiness\r\nin Israel, and he pondered how best he might indulge it, for a time,\r\nwithout imperilling the precious documents in his custody.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJJ20F155CN1VA4X6YHX3","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1DKC9HHJRKY25JZBEXW","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKJ9NDBQ4PPFNWDZDTMXA","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:08.498Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:15.054Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
