And next minute he lets grow his wings\r\nagain; flying, one dare say, at the rate of something less than thirty\r\nmiles an hour.\r\n\r\n“Stop thief!” is now the cry. Numbers rushed from the roadside houses.\r\nAfter a mile’s chase, the poor panting deer is caught.\r\n\r\nFinding it was no use now to prevaricate, Israel boldly confesses\r\nhimself a prisoner-of-war. The officer, a good fellow as it turned out,\r\nhad him escorted back to the inn; where, observing to the landlord that\r\nthis must needs be a true-blooded Yankee, he calls for liquors to\r\nrefresh Israel after his run. Two soldiers are then appointed to guard\r\nhim for the present. This was towards evening; and up to a late hour at\r\nnight, the inn was filled with strangers crowding to see the Yankee\r\nrebel, as they politely termed him. These honest rustics seemed to\r\nthink that Yankees were a sort of wild creatures, a species of ’possum\r\nor kangaroo. But Israel is very affable with them. That liquor he drank\r\nfrom the hand of his foe, has perhaps warmed his heart towards all the\r\nrest of his enemies. Yet this may not be wholly so. We shall see. At\r\nany rate, still he keeps his eye on the main chance—escape. Neither the\r\njokes nor the insults of the mob does he suffer to molest him. He is\r\ncogitating a little plot to himself.\r\n\r\nIt seems that the good officer—not more true to the king his master\r\nthan indulgent towards the prisoner which that same loyalty made—had\r\nleft orders that Israel should be supplied with whatever liquor he\r\nwanted that night. So, calling for the can again and again, Israel\r\ninvites the two soldiers to drink and be merry. At length, a wag of the\r\ncompany proposes that Israel should entertain the public with a jig, he\r\n(the wag) having heard that the Yankees were extraordinary dancers. A\r\nfiddle is brought in, and poor Israel takes the floor. Not a little cut\r\nto think that these people should so unfeelingly seek to be diverted at\r\nthe expense of an unfortunate prisoner, Israel, while jigging it up and\r\ndown, still conspires away at his private plot, resolving ere long to\r\ngive the enemy a touch of certain Yankee steps, as yet undreamed of in\r\ntheir simple philosophy. They would not permit any cessation of his\r\ndancing till he had danced himself into a perfect sweat, so that the\r\ndrops fell from his lank and flaxen hair. But Israel, with much of the\r\ngentleness of the dove, is not wholly without the wisdom of the\r\nserpent. Pleased to see the flowing bowl, he congratulates himself that\r\nhis own state of perspiration prevents it from producing any\r\nintoxicating effect upon him.\r\n\r\nLate at night the company break up. Furnished with a pair of handcuffs,\r\nthe prisoner is laid on a blanket spread upon the floor at the side of\r\nthe bed in which his two keepers are to repose. Expressing much\r\ngratitude for the blanket, with apparent unconcern, Israel stretches\r\nhis legs. An hour or two passes. All is quiet without.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 4"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJHFMCDZKHPXTDK6NQM6D","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1DKC9HHJRKY25JZBEXW","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKFNPMWPA2YV6BKH6HCXC","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AKG9BG6DDV036NJ7ED1WP","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:06.441Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:12.955Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
