While hobbling\r\nthrough its main street, as through the former one, he was suddenly\r\nstopped by a genuine cripple, all in tatters, too, who, with a\r\nsympathetic air, inquired after the cause of his lameness.\r\n\r\n“White swelling,” says Israel.\r\n\r\n“That’s just my ailing,” wheezed the other; “but you’re lamer than me,”\r\nhe added with a forlorn sort of self-satisfaction, critically eyeing\r\nIsrael’s limp as once, more he stumped on his way, not liking to tarry\r\ntoo long.\r\n\r\n“But halloo, what’s your hurry, friend?” seeing Israel fairly\r\ndeparting—“where’re you going?”\r\n\r\n“To London,” answered Israel, turning round, heartily wishing the old\r\nfellow any where else than present.\r\n\r\n“Going to limp to Lunnun, eh? Well, success to ye.”\r\n\r\n“As much to you, sir,” answers Israel politely.\r\n\r\nNigh the opposite suburbs of this village, as good fortune would have\r\nit, an empty baggage-wagon bound for the metropolis turned into the\r\nmain road from a side one. Immediately Israel limps most deplorably,\r\nand begs the driver to give a poor cripple a lift. So up he climbs; but\r\nafter a time, finding the gait of the elephantine draught-horses\r\nintolerably slow, Israel craves permission to dismount, when, throwing\r\naway his crutch, he takes nimbly to his legs, much to the surprise of\r\nhis honest friend the driver.\r\n\r\nThe only advantage, if any, derived from his trip in the wagon, was,\r\nwhen passing through a third village—but a little distant from the\r\nprevious one—Israel, by lying down in the wagon, had wholly avoided\r\nbeing seen.\r\n\r\nThe villages surprised him by their number and proximity. Nothing like\r\nthis was to be seen at home. Well knowing that in these villages he ran\r\nmuch more risk of detection than in the open country, he henceforth did\r\nhis best to avoid them, by taking a roundabout course whenever they\r\ncame in sight from a distance. This mode of travelling not only\r\nlengthened his journey, but put unlooked-for obstacles in his\r\npath—walls, ditches, and streams.\r\n\r\nNot half an hour after throwing away his crutch, he leaped a great\r\nditch ten feet wide, and of undiscoverable muddy depth. I wonder if the\r\nold cripple would think me the lamer one now, thought Israel to\r\nhimself, arriving on the hither side.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 8"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJHFMCDZKHPXTDK6NQM6D","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1DKC9HHJRKY25JZBEXW","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKG999T6A85YJ3JCRFZ2A","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:06.440Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:13.067Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
