It belongs to the boat, I believe--a\r\npresent from a society.\"\r\n\r\n\"Oh, take it, take it!\"\r\n\r\n\"Nay, sir, I did not mean to touch you at all. I simply stated the fact\r\nin explanation of my waiting here--nothing more. Read on, sir, or you\r\nwill distress me.\"\r\n\r\nThis courtesy was not without effect. Removing his spectacles, and\r\nsaying he had about finished his chapter, the old man kindly presented\r\nthe volume, which was received with thanks equally kind. After reading\r\nfor some minutes, until his expression merged from attentiveness into\r\nseriousness, and from that into a kind of pain, the cosmopolitan slowly\r\nlaid down the book, and turning to the old man, who thus far had been\r\nwatching him with benign curiosity, said: \"Can you, my aged friend,\r\nresolve me a doubt--a disturbing doubt?\"\r\n\r\n\"There are doubts, sir,\" replied the old man, with a changed\r\ncountenance, \"there are doubts, sir, which, if man have them, it is not\r\nman that can solve them.\"\r\n\r\n\"True; but look, now, what my doubt is. I am one who thinks well of man.\r\nI love man. I have confidence in man. But what was told me not a\r\nhalf-hour since? I was told that I would find it written--'Believe not\r\nhis many words--an enemy speaketh sweetly with his lips'--and also I was\r\ntold that I would find a good deal more to the same effect, and all in\r\nthis book. I could not think it; and, coming here to look for myself,\r\nwhat do I read? Not only just what was quoted, but also, as was engaged,\r\nmore to the same purpose, such as this: 'With much communication he will\r\ntempt thee; he will smile upon thee, and speak thee fair, and say What\r\nwantest thou? If thou be for his profit he will use thee; he will make\r\nthee bear, and will not be sorry for it. Observe and take good heed.\r\nWhen thou hearest these things, awake in thy sleep.'\"\r\n\r\n\"Who's that describing the confidence-man?\" here came from the berth\r\nagain.\r\n\r\n\"Awake in his sleep, sure enough, ain't he?\" said the cosmopolitan,\r\nagain looking off in surprise. \"Same voice as before, ain't it? Strange\r\nsort of dreamy man, that. Which is his berth, pray?\"\r\n\r\n\"Never mind _him_, sir,\" said the old man anxiously, \"but tell me truly,\r\ndid you, indeed, read from the book just now?\"\r\n\r\n\"I did,\" with changed air, \"and gall and wormwood it is to me, a truster\r\nin man; to me, a philanthropist.\"\r\n\r\n\"Why,\" moved, \"you don't mean to say, that what you repeated is really\r\ndown there? Man and boy, I have read the good book this seventy years,\r\nand don't remember seeing anything like that. Let me see it,\" rising\r\nearnestly, and going round to him.\r\n\r\n\"There it is; and there--and there\"--turning over the leaves, and\r\npointing to the sentences one by one; \"there--all down in the 'Wisdom of\r\nJesus, the Son of Sirach.'\"\r\n\r\n\"Ah!\" cried the old man, brightening up, \"now I know. Look,\" turning the\r\nleaves forward and back, till all the Old Testament lay flat on one\r\nside, and all the New Testament flat on the other, while in his fingers\r\nhe supported vertically the portion between, \"look, sir, all this to the\r\nright is certain truth, and all this to the left is certain truth, but\r\nall I hold in my hand here is apocrypha.\"\r\n\r\n\"Apocrypha?\"\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJNPWTERPN2J92AFP8QXB","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JMR8XVKPA0G8ADAPC4","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AKC4DB1Y48VNFCJJE6CJN","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AKC4FYBNZ1K8QSF2NCJPT","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:48:02.191Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:15.516Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
