And all by passing round a _hat_,\r\nas it were.\"\r\n\r\n\"Yes, I am no Fourier, the projector of an impossible scheme, but a\r\nphilanthropist and a financier setting forth a philanthropy and a\r\nfinance which are practicable.\"\r\n\r\n\"Practicable?\"\r\n\r\n\"Yes. Eleven thousand two hundred millions; it will frighten none but a\r\nretail philanthropist. What is it but eight hundred millions for each of\r\nfourteen years? Now eight hundred millions--what is that, to average it,\r\nbut one little dollar a head for the population of the planet? And who\r\nwill refuse, what Turk or Dyak even, his own little dollar for sweet\r\ncharity's sake? Eight hundred millions! More than that sum is yearly\r\nexpended by mankind, not only in vanities, but miseries. Consider that\r\nbloody spendthrift, War. And are mankind so stupid, so wicked, that,\r\nupon the demonstration of these things they will not, amending their\r\nways, devote their superfluities to blessing the world instead of\r\ncursing it? Eight hundred millions! They have not to make it, it is\r\ntheirs already; they have but to direct it from ill to good. And to\r\nthis, scarce a self-denial is demanded. Actually, they would not in the\r\nmass be one farthing the poorer for it; as certainly would they be all\r\nthe better and happier. Don't you see? But admit, as you must, that\r\nmankind is not mad, and my project is practicable. For, what creature\r\nbut a madman would not rather do good than ill, when it is plain that,\r\ngood or ill, it must return upon himself?\"\r\n\r\n\"Your sort of reasoning,\" said the good gentleman, adjusting his gold\r\nsleeve-buttons, \"seems all reasonable enough, but with mankind it wont\r\ndo.\"\r\n\r\n\"Then mankind are not reasoning beings, if reason wont do with them.\"\r\n\r\n\"That is not to the purpose. By-the-way, from the manner in which you\r\nalluded to the world's census, it would appear that, according to your\r\nworld-wide scheme, the pauper not less than the nabob is to contribute\r\nto the relief of pauperism, and the heathen not less than the Christian\r\nto the conversion of heathenism. How is that?\"\r\n\r\n\"Why, that--pardon me--is quibbling. Now, no philanthropist likes to be\r\nopposed with quibbling.\"\r\n\r\n\"Well, I won't quibble any more. But, after all, if I understand your\r\nproject, there is little specially new in it, further than the\r\nmagnifying of means now in operation.\"\r\n\r\n\"Magnifying and energizing. For one thing, missions I would thoroughly\r\nreform. Missions I would quicken with the Wall street spirit.\"\r\n\r\n\"The Wall street spirit?\"\r\n\r\n\"Yes; for if, confessedly, certain spiritual ends are to be gained but\r\nthrough the auxiliary agency of worldly means, then, to the surer\r\ngaining of such spiritual ends, the example of worldly policy in worldly\r\nprojects should not by spiritual projectors be slighted. In brief, the\r\nconversion of the heathen, so far, at least, as depending on human\r\neffort, would, by the world's charity, be let out on contract. So much\r\nby bid for converting India, so much for Borneo, so much for Africa.\r\nCompetition allowed, stimulus would be given. There would be no\r\nlethargy of monopoly. We should have no mission-house or tract-house of\r\nwhich slanderers could, with any plausibility, say that it had\r\ndegenerated in its clerkships into a sort of custom-house. But the main\r\npoint is the Archimedean money-power that would be brought to bear.\"\r\n\r\n\"You mean the eight hundred million power?\"\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 5"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJJRSD8D6KH52EB3K3B42","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J1JMR8XVKPA0G8ADAPC4","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AK9AC9ZA3QVZZHDJQT6AP","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AK9AC0MF45EBMRSS8XM07","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:47:59.308Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:48:07.226Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
