Through the arts of the\r\nconspirators and the perversity of fortune, the most sensitive love of\r\nliberty was entrapped into the support of a war whose implied end was\r\nthe erecting in our advanced century of an Anglo-American empire based\r\nupon the systematic degradation of man.\r\n\r\nSpite this clinging reproach, however, signal military virtues and\r\nachievements have conferred upon the Confederate arms historic fame,\r\nand upon certain of the commanders a renown extending beyond the sea—a\r\nrenown which we of the North could not suppress, even if we would. In\r\npersonal character, also, not a few of the military leaders of the\r\nSouth enforce forbearance; the memory of others the North refrains from\r\ndisparaging; and some, with more or less of reluctance, she can\r\nrespect. Posterity, sympathizing with our convictions, but removed from\r\nour passions, may perhaps go farther here. If George IV could, out of\r\nthe graceful instinct of a gentleman, raise an honorable monument in\r\nthe great fane of Christendom over the remains of the enemy of his\r\ndynasty, Charles Edward, the invader of England and victor in the rout\r\nof Preston Pans—upon whose head the king’s ancestor but one reign\r\nremoved had set a price—is it probable that the granchildren of General\r\nGrant will pursue with rancor, or slur by sour neglect, the memory of\r\nStonewall Jackson?\r\n\r\nBut the South herself is not wanting in recent histories and\r\nbiographies which record the deeds of her chieftains—writings freely\r\npublished at the North by loyal houses, widely read here, and with a\r\ndeep though saddened interest. By students of the war such works are\r\nhailed as welcome accessories, and tending to the completeness of the\r\nrecord.\r\n\r\nSupposing a happy issue out of present perplexities, then, in the\r\ngeneration next to come, Southerners there will be yielding allegiance\r\nto the Union, feeling all their interests bound up in it, and yet\r\ncherishing unrebuked that kind of feeling for the memory of the\r\nsoldiers of the fallen Confederacy that Burns, Scott, and the Ettrick\r\nShepherd felt for the memory of the gallant clansmen ruined through\r\ntheir fidelity to the Stuarts—a feeling whose passion was tempered by\r\nthe poetry imbuing it, and which in no wise affected their loyalty to\r\nthe Georges, and which, it may be added, indirectly contributed\r\nexcellent things to literature. But, setting this view aside,\r\ndishonorable would it be in the South were she willing to abandon to\r\nshame the memory of brave men who with signal personal\r\ndisinterestedness warred in her behalf, though from motives, as we\r\nbelieve, so deplorably astray.\r\n\r\nPatriotism is not baseness, neither is it inhumanity. The mourners who\r\nthis summer bear flowers to the mounds of the Virginian and Georgian\r\ndead are, in their domestic bereavement and proud affection, as sacred\r\nin the eye of Heaven as are those who go with similar offerings of\r\ntender grief and love into the cemeteries of our Northern martyrs. And\r\nyet, in one aspect, how needless to point the contrast.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG8AJH7EV97HBYT86WXTTGVX","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG89J19Y3FNVN5KWASY78BP4","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG89HMDZKNY753EZE1CJ8HZW","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG8AK1DXZFEFS29QVVJCC2CF","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG8AK1DX1TRXTTGWBP21K9N6","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T20:47:51.227Z","ts":"2026-01-30T20:47:53.083Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
