Here we reclined upon mats. Balmy and fresh blew the breath\r\nof the morning; golden vapors were upon the mountains, silver sheen\r\nupon the grass; and the birds were at matins in the groves; their\r\nbright plumage flashing into view, here and there, as if some rainbow\r\nwere crouching in the foliage.\r\n\r\nSpread before us were viands, served in quaint-shaped, curiously-dyed\r\ngourds, not Sevres, but almost as tasteful; and like true porcelain,\r\nfire had tempered them. Green and yielding, they are plucked from the\r\ntree; and emptied of their pulp, are scratched over with minute marks,\r\nlike those of a line engraving. The ground prepared, the various\r\nfigures are carefully etched. And the outlines filled up with delicate\r\npunctures, certain vegetable oils are poured over them, for coloring.\r\nFilled with a peculiar species of earth, the gourd is now placed in an\r\noven in the ground. And in due time exhumed, emptied of its contents,\r\nand washed in the stream, it presents a deep-dyed exterior; every\r\nfigure distinctly traced and opaque, but the ground semi-transparent.\r\nIn some cases, owing to the variety of dyes employed, each figure is of\r\na different hue.\r\n\r\nMore glorious goblets than these for the drinking of wine, went never\r\nfrom hand to mouth. Capacious as pitchers, they almost superseded\r\ndecanters.\r\n\r\nNow, in a tropical climate, fruit, with light wines, forms the only fit\r\nmeal of a morning. And with orchards and vineyards forever in sight,\r\nwho but the Hetman of the Cossacs would desire more? We had plenty of\r\nthe juice of the grape. But of this hereafter; there are some fine old\r\ncellars, and plenty of good cheer in store.\r\n\r\nDuring the repast, Media, for a time, was much taken up with our\r\nraiment. He begged me to examine for a moment the texture of his right\r\nroyal robe, and observe how much superior it was to my own. It put my\r\nmantle to the blush; being tastefully stained with rare devices in red\r\nand black; and bordered with dyed fringes of feathers, and tassels of\r\nred birds’ claws.\r\n\r\nNext came under observation the Skyeman’s Guayaquil hat; at whose\r\npreposterous shape, our host laughed in derision; clapping a great\r\nconical calabash upon the head of an attendant, and saying that now he\r\nwas Jarl. At this, and all similar sallies, Samoa was sure to roar\r\nlouder than any; though mirth was no constitutional thing with him. But\r\nhe seemed rejoiced at the opportunity of turning upon us the ridicule,\r\nwhich as a barbarian among whites, he himself had so often experienced.\r\n\r\nThese pleasantries over, King Media very slightly drew himself up, as\r\nif to make amends for his previous unbending. He discoursed imperially\r\nwith his chiefs; nodded his sovereign will to his pages; called for\r\nanother gourd of wine; in all respects carrying his royalty bravely.\r\n\r\nThe repast concluded, we journeyed to the canoe-house, where we found\r\nthe little Chamois stabled like a steed. One solitary depredation had\r\nbeen committed. Its sides and bottom had been completely denuded of the\r\nminute green barnacles, and short sea-grass, which, like so many\r\nleeches, had fastened to our planks during our long, lazy voyage.\r\n\r\nBy the people they had been devoured as dainties.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"CHAPTER LIX.
