But to kill or maim the\r\nnegroes was not the object. To take them, with the ship, was the\r\nobject. To do it, the ship must be boarded; which could not be done by\r\nboats while she was sailing so fast.\r\n\r\nA thought now struck the mate. Observing the Spanish boys still aloft,\r\nhigh as they could get, he called to them to descend to the yards, and\r\ncut adrift the sails. It was done. About this time, owing to causes\r\nhereafter to be shown, two Spaniards, in the dress of sailors, and\r\nconspicuously showing themselves, were killed; not by volleys, but by\r\ndeliberate marksman’s shots; while, as it afterwards appeared, by one\r\nof the general discharges, Atufal, the black, and the Spaniard at the\r\nhelm likewise were killed. What now, with the loss of the sails, and\r\nloss of leaders, the ship became unmanageable to the negroes.\r\n\r\nWith creaking masts, she came heavily round to the wind; the prow\r\nslowly swinging into view of the boats, its skeleton gleaming in the\r\nhorizontal moonlight, and casting a gigantic ribbed shadow upon the\r\nwater. One extended arm of the ghost seemed beckoning the whites to\r\navenge it.\r\n\r\n“Follow your leader!” cried the mate; and, one on each bow, the boats\r\nboarded. Sealing-spears and cutlasses crossed hatchets and hand-spikes.\r\nHuddled upon the long-boat amidships, the negresses raised a wailing\r\nchant, whose chorus was the clash of the steel.\r\n\r\nFor a time, the attack wavered; the negroes wedging themselves to beat\r\nit back; the half-repelled sailors, as yet unable to gain a footing,\r\nfighting as troopers in the saddle, one leg sideways flung over the\r\nbulwarks, and one without, plying their cutlasses like carters’ whips.\r\nBut in vain. They were almost overborne, when, rallying themselves into\r\na squad as one man, with a huzza, they sprang inboard, where,\r\nentangled, they involuntarily separated again. For a few breaths’\r\nspace, there was a vague, muffled, inner sound, as of submerged\r\nsword-fish rushing hither and thither through shoals of black-fish.\r\nSoon, in a reunited band, and joined by the Spanish seamen, the whites\r\ncame to the surface, irresistibly driving the negroes toward the stern.\r\nBut a barricade of casks and sacks, from side to side, had been thrown\r\nup by the main-mast. Here the negroes faced about, and though scorning\r\npeace or truce, yet fain would have had respite. But, without pause,\r\noverleaping the barrier, the unflagging sailors again closed.\r\nExhausted, the blacks now fought in despair. Their red tongues lolled,\r\nwolf-like, from their black mouths. But the pale sailors’ teeth were\r\nset; not a word was spoken; and, in five minutes more, the ship was\r\nwon.\r\n\r\nNearly a score of the negroes were killed. Exclusive of those by the\r\nballs, many were mangled; their wounds—mostly inflicted by the\r\nlong-edged sealing-spears, resembling those shaven ones of the English\r\nat Preston Pans, made by the poled scythes of the Highlanders. On the\r\nother side, none were killed, though several were wounded; some\r\nseverely, including the mate.
