But\r\nshe, out of the infatuate juvenility of hers, takes to nothing but\r\nnewness; for that cause mainly, loving new cider in autumn, and in\r\nspring, as if she were own daughter of Nebuchadnezzar, fairly raving\r\nafter all sorts of salads and spinages, and more particularly green\r\ncucumbers (though all the time nature rebukes such unsuitable young\r\nhankerings in so elderly a person, by never permitting such things to\r\nagree with her), and has an itch after recently-discovered fine\r\nprospects (so no graveyard be in the background), and also after\r\nSwedenborgianism, and the Spirit Rapping philosophy, with other new\r\nviews, alike in things natural and unnatural; and immortally hopeful,\r\nis forever making new flower-beds even on the north side of the house\r\nwhere the bleak mountain wind would scarce allow the wiry weed called\r\nhard-hack to gain a thorough footing; and on the road-side sets out\r\nmere pipe-stems of young elms; though there is no hope of any shade\r\nfrom them, except over the ruins of her great granddaughter’s\r\ngravestones; and won’t wear caps, but plaits her gray hair; and takes\r\nthe Ladies’ Magazine for the fashions; and always buys her new almanac\r\na month before the new year; and rises at dawn; and to the warmest\r\nsunset turns a cold shoulder; and still goes on at odd hours with her\r\nnew course of history, and her French, and her music; and likes a young\r\ncompany; and offers to ride young colts; and sets out young suckers in\r\nthe orchard; and has a spite against my elbowed old grape-vine, and my\r\nclub-footed old neighbor, and my claw-footed old chair, and above all,\r\nhigh above all, would fain persecute, unto death, my high-mantled old\r\nchimney. By what perverse magic, I a thousand times think, does such a\r\nvery autumnal old lady have such a very vernal young soul? When I would\r\nremonstrate at times, she spins round on me with, “Oh, don’t you\r\ngrumble, old man (she always calls me old man), it’s I, young I, that\r\nkeep you from stagnating.” Well, I suppose it is so. Yea, after all,\r\nthese things are well ordered. My wife, as one of her poor relations,\r\ngood soul, intimates, is the salt of the earth, and none the less the\r\nsalt of my sea, which otherwise were unwholesome. She is its monsoon,\r\ntoo, blowing a brisk gale over it, in the one steady direction of my\r\nchimney.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 3"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG6YGAG0XF41PYX0D598Y7TN","peer_type":"segment","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG6YDDFE1YJ2Q37Q9JT1AJVB","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG6YCG626JN4FCG8QK17CQCF","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG6YGMRP5R2E77S92F1GJXRD","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG6YGMRRAEEG55BK7HZN3ZYC","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T07:57:35.384Z","ts":"2026-01-30T07:57:36.888Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
