The other sketches cover a variety of\r\nhomely subjects treated by Melville with a fresh humor, richly phrased\r\nand curiously personal. Longer and in some ways more ambitious prose\r\npieces written about this same time have been collected under the\r\ntitle of \"Piazza Tales,\" but none of the sketches which follow have\r\nheretofore been gathered into a book. This has now been done not only\r\nto answer a growing demand for accessible reprints of Melville's work\r\nbut also in response to the literary appeal of the sketches themselves.\r\nThe author's phraseology and punctuation have, of course, been,\r\nfollowed exactly._\r\n\r\n H.
