The country looked\r\nunderdone, its raw juices squirting out all round. I buttoned out this\r\nsquitchy air as well as I could with my lean, double-breasted\r\ndress-coat--my overcoat being so long-skirted I only used it in my\r\nwagon--and spitefully thrusting my crab-stick into the oozy sod, bent my\r\nblue form to the steep ascent of the hill. This toiling posture brought\r\nmy head pretty well earthward, as if I were in the act of butting it\r\nagainst the world. I marked the fact, but only grinned at it with a\r\nghastly grin.\r\n\r\nAll round me were tokens of a divided empire. The old grass and the new\r\ngrass were striving together. In the low wet swales the verdure peeped\r\nout in vivid green; beyond, on the mountains, lay light patches of snow,\r\nstrangely relieved against their russet sides; all the humped hills\r\nlooked like brindled kine in the shivers. The woods were strewn with dry\r\ndead boughs, snapped off by the riotous winds of March, while the young\r\ntrees skirting the woods were just beginning to show the first yellowish\r\ntinge of the nascent spray.\r\n\r\nI sat down for a moment on a great rotting log nigh the top of the hill,\r\nmy back to a heavy grove, my face presented toward a wide, sweeping\r\ncircuit of mountains enclosing a rolling, diversified country. Along the\r\nbase of one long range of heights ran a lagging, fever-and-agueish\r\nriver, over which was a duplicate stream of dripping mist, exactly\r\ncorresponding in every meander with its parent water below. Low down,\r\nhere and there, shreds of vapour listlessly wandered in the air, like\r\nabandoned or helmless nations or ships--or very soaky towels hung on\r\ncriss-cross clothes-lines to dry. Afar, over a distant village lying in\r\na bay of the plain formed by the mountains, there rested a great flat\r\ncanopy of haze, like a pall. It was the condensed smoke of the chimneys,\r\nwith the condensed, exhaled breath of the villagers, prevented from\r\ndispersion by the imprisoning hills. It was too heavy and lifeless to\r\nmount of itself; so there it lay, between the village and the sky,\r\ndoubtless hiding many a man with the mumps, and many a queasy child.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG6GKYHSKYXQBY9ZR3GF1CEP","peer_type":"section","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG6FXSCNX5F3D880P3YP3PKR","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG2T49K0H5GDRB0G4YDTPG8H","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG6GMPGX6GJK7CD1DHFM901R","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T03:55:08.189Z","ts":"2026-01-30T03:55:16.429Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
