But when to these was added the thought--that at the dead of\r\nnight, and in the company of a being so perfectly inexplicable, I was\r\neffecting a clandestine entrance into so remarkable an abode, the kind\r\nand sympathising reader will not wonder, when I wished myself bestowed\r\nin my own snug quarters in ⸻ Street.\r\n\r\nSuch were the reflections which passed through my mind during our aerial\r\nvoyage, throughout which my guide maintained the most rigid silence,\r\nonly broken at intervals by the occasional creakings of our machine, as\r\nit rubbed against the side of the house in its ascent. No sooner had we\r\ngained the window, than two brawny arms were extended, circling me in\r\ntheir embrace, and ere I was aware of the change of locality, I found\r\nmyself standing upright in an apartment, dimly illuminated by a solitary\r\ntaper. My fellow-voyager was quickly beside me, and again enjoining\r\nsilence with her finger, she seized the lamp, and bidding me follow,\r\nconducted me through a long corridor, till we reached a low door\r\nconcealed behind some old tapestry, which opening to the touch,\r\ndisclosed a spectacle as beautiful and enchanting as any described in\r\nthe Arabian Nights.\r\n\r\nThe apartment we now entered, was fitted up in a style of Eastern\r\nsplendour, and its atmosphere was redolent of the most delicious\r\nperfumes. The walls were hung round with the most elegant draperies,\r\nwaving in graceful folds, on which were delineated scenes of Arcadian\r\nbeauty. The floor was covered with a carpet of the finest texture, in\r\nwhich were wrought with exquisite skill the most striking events in\r\nancient mythology. Attached to the walls by cords composed of alternate\r\nthreads of crimson silk and gold, were several magnificent pictures\r\nillustrative of the loves of Jupiter and Semele, Psyche before the\r\ntribunal of Venus, and a variety of other scenes, limned all with\r\nfelicitous grace. Disposed around the room were luxurious couches,\r\ncovered with the finest damask, on which were likewise executed after\r\nthe Italian fashion the early fables of Greece and Rome. Tripods,\r\ndesigned to represent the Graces bearing aloft vases, richly chiselled\r\nin the classic taste, were distributed in the angles of the room, and\r\nexhaled an intoxicating fragrance.\r\n\r\nChandeliers of the most fanciful description, suspended from the lofty\r\nceiling by rods of silver, shed over this voluptuous scene a soft and\r\ntempered light, and imparted to the whole that dreamy beauty which must\r\nbe seen in order to be duly appreciated. Mirrors of unusual magnitude,\r\nmultiplying in all directions the gorgeous objects, deceived the eye by\r\ntheir reflections, and mocked the vision with long perspective.\r\n\r\nBut overwhelming as was the display of opulence, it yielded in\r\nattraction to the being for whom all this splendour glistened; and the\r\ngrandeur of the room served only to show to advantage the matchless\r\nbeauty of its inmate. These superb decorations, though lavished in\r\nboundless profusion, were the mere accessories of a creature, whose\r\nloveliness was of that spiritual cast that depended upon no adventitious\r\naid, and which as no obscurity could diminish, so no art could heighten.\r\n\r\nWhen I first obtained a glimpse of this lovely being, she lay reclining\r\nupon an ottoman; in one hand holding a lute, and with the other, lost in\r\nthe profusion of her silken tresses, she supported her head. I could not\r\nrefrain from recalling the passionate exclamation of Romeo:--\r\n\r\n              ‘See, how she leans her cheek upon her hand!\r\n               O, that I were a glove upon that hand,\r\n               That I might touch that cheek!’\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 15"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG6GK9PNMK2BH5C1BFJXTJS2","peer_type":"segment","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG6FXSCNX5F3D880P3YP3PKR","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG2T49K0H5GDRB0G4YDTPG8H","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG6GMK352KQ16XDVBB77MM69","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG6GMKMY035C46VNJFCXAWJ3","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T03:55:04.677Z","ts":"2026-01-30T03:55:23.097Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
