It took about half a minute, I should think. And, Lord bless\r\nyou, the lubber was astonished at the celerity. And will you believe it,\r\nLieutenant, the Red Whiskers now really loves Billy--loves him, or is\r\nthe biggest hypocrite that ever I heard of. But they all love him. Some\r\nof ’em do his washing, darn old trowsers for him; the carpenter is at\r\nodd times making a pretty little chest of drawers for him. Anybody will\r\ndo anything for Billy Budd; and it’s the happy family here. Now,\r\nLieutenant, if that young fellow goes, I know how it will be aboard the\r\n_Rights_. Not again very soon shall I, coming up from dinner, lean over\r\nthe capstan smoking a quiet pipe--no, not very soon again, I think. Ay,\r\nLieutenant, you are going to take away the jewel of ’em; you are going\r\nto take away my peacemaker.’ And with that the good soul had really some\r\nado in checking a rising sob.\r\n\r\n‘Well,’ said the Lieutenant, who had listened with amused interest to\r\nall this, and now waxing merry with his tipple, ‘well, blessed are the\r\npeacemakers, especially the fighting peacemakers! And such are the\r\nseventy-four beauties, some of which you see poking their noses out of\r\nthe port-holes of yonder warship lying-to for me,’ pointing through the\r\ncabin windows at the _Indomitable_. ‘But courage! don’t look so\r\ndownhearted, man. Why, I pledge you in advance the royal approbation.\r\nRest assured that His Majesty will be delighted to know that in a time\r\nwhen his hard-tack is not sought for by sailors with such avidity as\r\nshould be; a time also when some shipmasters privily resent the\r\nborrowing from them of a tar or two for the service; His Majesty, I say,\r\nwill be delighted to learn that _one_ shipmaster at least cheerfully\r\nsurrenders to the King the flower of his flock, a sailor who with equal\r\nloyalty makes no dissent. But where’s my Beauty? Ah,’ looking through\r\nthe cabin’s open door, ‘here he comes; and, by Jove! lugging along his\r\nchest--Apollo with his portmanteau! My man,’ stepping out to him, ‘you\r\ncan’t take that big box aboard a warship. The boxes there are mostly\r\nshot-boxes. Put your duds in a bag, lad. Boot and saddle for the\r\ncavalryman, bag and hammock for the man-of-war’s man.’\r\n\r\nThe transfer from chest to bag was made. And, after seeing his man into\r\nthe cutter, and then following him down, the Lieutenant pushed off from\r\nthe _Rights-of-Man_. That was the merchant ship’s name; though by her\r\nmaster and crew abbreviated in sailor fashion into the _Rights_. The\r\nhard-headed Dundee owner was a staunch admirer of Thomas Paine, whose\r\nbook in rejoinder to Burke’s arraignment of the French Revolution had\r\nthen been published for some time, and had gone everywhere. In\r\nchristening his vessel after the title of Paine’s volume, the man of\r\nDundee was something like his contemporary shipowner, Stephen Girard of\r\nPhiladelphia, whose sympathies alike with his native land and its\r\nliberal philosophies he evinced by naming his ships after Voltaire,\r\nDiderot, and so forth.\r\n\r\nBut now when the boat swept under the merchantman’s stern, and officer\r\nand oarsmen were noting, some bitterly and others with a grin, the name\r\nemblazoned there; just then it was that the new recruit jumped up from\r\nthe bow where the coxswain had directed him to sit, and, waving his hat\r\nto his silent shipmates sorrowfully looking over at him from the\r\ntaffrail, bade the lads a genial good-bye. Then making a salutation as\r\nto the ship herself, ‘And good-bye to you too, old _Rights-of-Man_!’\r\n\r\n‘Down, sir,’ roared the Lieutenant, instantly assuming all the rigour of\r\nhis rank, though with difficulty repressing a smile.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 4"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG6GKXW9SMBC52ETPS4WD4XA","peer_type":"section","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG6FXSCNX5F3D880P3YP3PKR","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG2T49K0H5GDRB0G4YDTPG8H","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG6GMJF67ZSRMTXT0EKPDRBV","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG6GMJF4PV1F1KZMTTPMXEZV","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T03:55:04.038Z","ts":"2026-01-30T03:55:13.417Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
