But a person of genial temper is not only very likely to be\r\na popular man’s man, but also, and beyond that, a favourite with the\r\nladies. For it is something less venial than mere error in the old\r\nphilosopher penally branded with a horrible name--misogynist, I\r\nthink--and a soggy soul he must have been; it was something less venial\r\nthan error in him to say, as he did, that women, however apt to that\r\ngrand passion which makes the one divine rapture of life, have\r\nnevertheless a constitutional incapacity for good-fellowship, that is,\r\nin the masculine acceptation of the term. Assuredly, Hymen knows, too\r\nfew of them practically demonstrate their capacity for it. Some musky\r\ndew-drops from the Garden expelled Eve unwillingly carried away\r\nquivering in her hair. More than man, she partakes of the paradisiac\r\nspirit. Under favourable conditions evincing a quicker aptitude to\r\npleasure than man. How alert to twine the garland for the holiday! How\r\ninstinctively prompt for that faint semblance of Eden, the picnic in the\r\ngreenwood!\r\n\r\nNow there is something in the fine, open, cheery aspect of the Marquis\r\nde Grandvin that conveys a thrill to these frames so exquisitely strung\r\nto happiness. Not invariably running the risk of incurring dark clouds\r\nfrom their lords, the dames and sisters of the Benedicks of the clubs,\r\nat their balls and parties, cast upon the Marquis that kindled merry\r\nglance which, according to the old French epic whose theme is\r\nRoncesvalles, the ladies bestowed upon Roland; not alone smitten by the\r\nfame and taken with the person of that noble accredited nephew of\r\nCharlemagne, but rightly inferring him to be not more a David against\r\nthe Saracen than a champion against still more flagitious infidels,\r\nimpugners of the sex. Yes, it is by instinct that all superior women\r\nrecognise in this gentleman a cordial friend. Nor do they approve him\r\nthe less for his friendly alliance with his charming sphere. This is a\r\nverity not out of keeping with another, namely, this feminine\r\nappreciation of the Marquis, gracious though it be, hardly extends to\r\nsuch of his qualities as partake of the Grand Style, as one may say, the\r\nhighly elevated style; a style apparently demanding for its due\r\nappreciation a robust habit, in short, the masculine habit. For the most\r\npart, it is for his less exalted qualities that the ladies approve de\r\nGrandvin. They approve him for the way in which he contributes to those\r\namenities and gaieties in which the sexes upon common ground\r\nparticipate, and wherein, thanks to their gallantry of good-nature, the\r\ncountrymen of the Marquis de Grandvin have always excelled.\r\n\r\nThe foregoing hints as to what is the standing in America, or at least\r\namong some of us Americans, of the genial foreigner here ushered into a\r\nregard less exclusive; that, by patriotic intention goes before the\r\nrecital, show that not alone in his own sweet France are the blended\r\nsuavity and power of his genius estimated at their just rate, but that\r\nin the high circles of every European capital he is received with even\r\nmore than good-will.\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 1"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG6G6RFZ78NXTBC0B5M5HQR0","peer_type":"article","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG6FXSCNX5F3D880P3YP3PKR","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KG2T49K0H5GDRB0G4YDTPG8H","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG6G8ADCYXZBDP4JEFS2M4PE","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"next"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-30T03:48:22.580Z","ts":"2026-01-30T03:48:32.196Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
