They always looked\nmossy and awful, and he damn near made you sick if you saw him in the dining room\nwith his mouth full of mashed potatoes and peas or something. Besides that, he had a lot\nof pimples. Not just on his forehead or his chin, like most guys, but all over his whole\nface. And not only that, he had a terrible personality. He was also sort of a nasty guy. I\nwasn't too crazy about him, to tell you the truth.\nI could feel him standing on the shower ledge, right behind my chair, taking a\nlook to see if Stradlater was around. He hated Stradlater's guts and he never came in the\nroom if Stradlater was around. He hated everybody's guts, damn near.\nHe came down off the shower ledge and came in the room. \"Hi,\" he said. He\nalways said it like he was terrifically bored or terrifically tired. He didn't want you to\nthink he was visiting you or anything. He wanted you to think he'd come in by mistake,\nfor God's sake.\n\"Hi,\" I said, but I didn't look up from my book. With a guy like Ackley, if you\nlooked up from your book you were a goner. You were a goner anyway, but not as quick\nif you didn't look up right away.\nHe started walking around the room, very slow and all, the way he always did,\npicking up your personal stuff off your desk and chiffonier. He always picked up your\npersonal stuff and looked at it. Boy, could he get on your nerves sometimes. \"How was\nthe fencing?\" he said. He just wanted me to quit reading and enjoying myself. He didn't\ngive a damn about the fencing. \"We win, or what?\" he said.\n\"Nobody won,\" I said. Without looking up, though.\n\"What?\" he said. He always made you say everything twice.\n\"Nobody won,\" I said. I sneaked a look to see what he was fiddling around with\non my chiffonier. He was looking at this picture of this girl I used to go around with in\nNew York, Sally Hayes. He must've picked up that goddam picture and looked at it at\nleast five thousand times since I got it. He always put it back in the wrong place, too,\nwhen he was finished. He did it on purpose. You could tell.\n\"Nobody won,\" he said. \"How come?\"\n\"I left the goddam foils and stuff on the subway.\" I still didn't look up at him.\n\"On the subway, for Chrissake! Ya lost them, ya mean?\"\n\"We got on the wrong subway. I had to keep getting up to look at a goddam map\non the wall.\"\nHe came over and stood right in my light. \"Hey,\" I said. \"I've read this same\nsentence about twenty times since you came in.\"\nAnybody else except Ackley would've taken the goddam hint. Not him, though.\n\"Think they'll make ya pay for em?\" he said.\n\"I don't know, and I don't give a damn. How 'bout sitting down or something,\nAckley kid? You're right in my goddam light.\" He didn't like it when you called him\n\"Ackley kid.\" He was always telling me I was a goddam kid, because I was sixteen and\nhe was eighteen. It drove him mad when I called him \"Ackley kid.\"\nHe kept standing there. He was exactly the kind of a guy that wouldn't get out of\nyour light when you asked him to. He'd do it, finally, but it took him a lot longer if you\nasked him to. \"What the hellya reading?\" he said.\n\"Goddam book.\"","text_extracted_at":"2026-01-30T03:36:03.135Z","text_extracted_by":"pdf-processor","text_has_content":true,"text_source":"born_digital","uploaded":true,"width":1855},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KFHMJM2J9JHQAQM1Q9SKBJWF","predicate":"derived_from"},{"peer":"01KFF1K6A8V452X8SQKY55DD16","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG6FHSGKC5GV2W6S224CVX8E","predicate":"prev"},{"peer":"01KG6FHSG8A3G417EJ57DHZ38M","predicate":"next"},{"peer":"01KG6FJXN8WMSB6JKVDZ6NDTKA","peer_label":"Rye_page_0011_medium.jpg","peer_type":"file","predicate":"has_derivative"},{"peer":"01KG6FK16A42TDGVAJCY70ABYD","peer_label":"Rye_page_0011_thumb.jpg","peer_type":"file","predicate":"has_derivative"},{"peer":"01KG6FT59BXAZ3C5HRJ6SW8F58","predicate":"has_assembly"}],"ver":6,"created_at":"2026-01-30T03:36:04.360Z","ts":"2026-01-30T03:40:41.598Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFFC4A8W8939TXGEXCK439ZK"}}
