Aunt Polly was\r\ntender far beyond her wont, in her goodnight to Sid and Mary. Sid\r\nsnuffled a bit and Mary went off crying with all her heart.\r\n\r\nAunt Polly knelt down and prayed for Tom so touchingly, so appealingly,\r\nand with such measureless love in her words and her old trembling voice,\r\nthat he was weltering in tears again, long before she was through.\r\n\r\nHe had to keep still long after she went to bed, for she kept making\r\nbroken-hearted ejaculations from time to time, tossing unrestfully, and\r\nturning over. But at last she was still, only moaning a little in her\r\nsleep. Now the boy stole out, rose gradually by the bedside, shaded the\r\ncandle-light with his hand, and stood regarding her. His heart was full\r\nof pity for her. He took out his sycamore scroll and placed it by the\r\ncandle. But something occurred to him, and he lingered considering.\r\nHis face lighted with a happy solution of his thought; he put the bark\r\nhastily in his pocket. Then he bent over and kissed the faded lips, and\r\nstraightway made his stealthy exit, latching the door behind him.\r\n\r\nHe threaded his way back to the ferry landing, found nobody at large\r\nthere, and walked boldly on board the boat, for he knew she was\r\ntenantless except that there was a watchman, who always turned in and\r\nslept like a graven image. He untied the skiff at the stern, slipped\r\ninto it, and was soon rowing cautiously upstream. When he had pulled a\r\nmile above the village, he started quartering across and bent himself\r\nstoutly to his work. He hit the landing on the other side neatly, for\r\nthis was a familiar bit of work to him. He was moved to capture\r\nthe skiff, arguing that it might be considered a ship and therefore\r\nlegitimate prey for a pirate, but he knew a thorough search would be\r\nmade for it and that might end in revelations. So he stepped ashore and\r\nentered the woods.\r\n\r\nHe sat down and took a long rest, torturing himself meanwhile to keep\r\nawake, and then started warily down the home-stretch. The night was far\r\nspent. It was broad daylight before he found himself fairly abreast the\r\nisland bar. He rested again until the sun was well up and gilding the\r\ngreat river with its splendor, and then he plunged into the stream. A\r\nlittle later he paused, dripping, upon the threshold of the camp, and\r\nheard Joe say:\r\n\r\n“No, Tom’s true-blue, Huck, and he’ll come back. He won’t desert. He\r\nknows that would be a disgrace to a pirate, and Tom’s too proud for that\r\nsort of thing. He’s up to something or other. Now I wonder what?”\r\n\r\n“Well, the things is ours, anyway, ain’t they?”\r\n\r\n“Pretty near, but not yet, Huck. The writing says they are if he ain’t\r\nback here to breakfast.”\r\n\r\n“Which he is!” exclaimed Tom, with fine dramatic effect, stepping\r\ngrandly into camp.\r\n\r\nA sumptuous breakfast of bacon and fish was shortly provided, and as the\r\nboys set to work upon it, Tom recounted (and adorned) his adventures.\r\nThey were a vain and boastful company of heroes when the tale was done.\r\nThen Tom hid himself away in a shady nook to sleep till noon, and the\r\nother pirates got ready to fish and explore.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 3"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG176GW8BCGCC8DXG51SB4PY","peer_label":"CHAPTER XV","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG0K71QZ8KK7RGEGSNTB5534","peer_label":"tom_sawyer.txt","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KFXT0KM64XT6K8W52TDEE0YS","peer_label":"More Classics","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG178YX249851Q04ARVQN7DR","peer_label":"Chunk 2","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-28T02:35:14.542Z","ts":"2026-01-28T02:35:15.345Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
