I didn’t see the box, I didn’t see\r\nthe cross. I didn’t see anything but a bottle and a tin cup on the floor\r\nby Injun Joe; yes, I saw two barrels and lots more bottles in the room.\r\nDon’t you see, now, what’s the matter with that ha’nted room?”\r\n\r\n“How?”\r\n\r\n“Why, it’s ha’nted with whiskey! Maybe _all_ the Temperance Taverns have\r\ngot a ha’nted room, hey, Huck?”\r\n\r\n“Well, I reckon maybe that’s so. Who’d ’a’ thought such a thing? But\r\nsay, Tom, now’s a mighty good time to get that box, if Injun Joe’s\r\ndrunk.”\r\n\r\n“It is, that! You try it!”\r\n\r\nHuck shuddered.\r\n\r\n“Well, no—I reckon not.”\r\n\r\n“And I reckon not, Huck. Only one bottle alongside of Injun Joe ain’t\r\nenough. If there’d been three, he’d be drunk enough and I’d do it.”\r\n\r\nThere was a long pause for reflection, and then Tom said:\r\n\r\n“Lookyhere, Huck, less not try that thing any more till we know Injun\r\nJoe’s not in there. It’s too scary. Now, if we watch every night, we’ll\r\nbe dead sure to see him go out, some time or other, and then we’ll\r\nsnatch that box quicker’n lightning.”\r\n\r\n“Well, I’m agreed. I’ll watch the whole night long, and I’ll do it every\r\nnight, too, if you’ll do the other part of the job.”\r\n\r\n“All right, I will. All you got to do is to trot up Hooper Street a\r\nblock and maow—and if I’m asleep, you throw some gravel at the window\r\nand that’ll fetch me.”\r\n\r\n“Agreed, and good as wheat!”\r\n\r\n“Now, Huck, the storm’s over, and I’ll go home. It’ll begin to be\r\ndaylight in a couple of hours. You go back and watch that long, will\r\nyou?”\r\n\r\n“I said I would, Tom, and I will. I’ll ha’nt that tavern every night for\r\na year! I’ll sleep all day and I’ll stand watch all night.”\r\n\r\n“That’s all right. Now, where you going to sleep?”\r\n\r\n“In Ben Rogers’ hayloft. He lets me, and so does his pap’s nigger man,\r\nUncle Jake. I tote water for Uncle Jake whenever he wants me to, and any\r\ntime I ask him he gives me a little something to eat if he can spare it.\r\nThat’s a mighty good nigger, Tom. He likes me, becuz I don’t ever act as\r\nif I was above him. Sometime I’ve set right down and eat _with_ him. But\r\nyou needn’t tell that. A body’s got to do things when he’s awful hungry\r\nhe wouldn’t want to do as a steady thing.”\r\n\r\n“Well, if I don’t want you in the daytime, I’ll let you sleep. I won’t\r\ncome bothering around. Any time you see something’s up, in the night,\r\njust skip right around and maow.”\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r","title":"Chunk 2"},"relationships":[{"peer":"01KG16PT9MRQQ9HJD59C1XY8AZ","peer_label":"CHAPTER XXVIII","peer_type":"chapter","predicate":"in"},{"peer":"01KG0K71QZ8KK7RGEGSNTB5534","peer_label":"tom_sawyer.txt","peer_type":"file","predicate":"extractedFrom"},{"peer":"01KFXT0KM64XT6K8W52TDEE0YS","peer_label":"More Classics","peer_type":"collection","predicate":"collection"},{"peer":"01KG16V106NKSQKG2EAM0QE10C","peer_label":"Chunk 1","peer_type":"chunk","predicate":"prev"}],"ver":2,"created_at":"2026-01-28T02:27:37.757Z","ts":"2026-01-28T02:27:38.505Z","edited_by":{"method":"manual","user_id":"01KFF0H3YRP9ZSM033AM0QJ47H"}}
